The Xbox One didn’t have the best of starts, but has been bolstered this year with the release of the Xbox One X. With hardcore gamers now looking at the Xbox One X in a serious way, here are the best Xbox One games of 2017. Buy any of these and you’ll have a great time with some brilliant games.

If you want to know what the best games for PS4, Xbox One, Switch or PC were in 2017, head on over to our lovely Best Games of 2017 hub. It’s got links to all our articles so you can find the best games for your platform of choice.

Cuphead

The Dark Souls of platformers. The God Hand of platformers. The Europa Universalis of platformers. OK, enough with the lazy and useless comparisons! Cuphead is a platformer with some shooting, and it’s pretty tricky. It’s also one of the most visually impressive 2D games ever created. Cuphead’s gorgeous graphics no doubt attracted a crowd who weren’t quite prepared for the difficulty to be as high as it is, but if you’ve got the skills there’s a lot to appreciate here. Just don’t broadcast yourself playing to the internet!

Forza 7

Do you like racing games? Do you own an Xbox One? Well, then, Forza 7 is a great racing game you should probably play. Although Forza 7 is one of a growing list of games blighted by loot boxes, it’s also got one of the best handling models and thrilling racing. There’s a lot of content in Forza 7, plus a robust solo and online experience, and it looks amazing in 4K on the Xbox One X. While not as immediately as exciting as Forza Horizon 3, Forza 7 is another fine entry in a series Microsoft and Turn 10 rarely make a wrong turn with.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Ramping up the chaos of The New Order even further, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus pits our William Joseph Blascowicz against the Nazi empire, as he comes face to face with demons from his past and present. A harrowing depiction of war and mental illness, Wolfenstein 2 never lets up the tension or violence, throwing hordes of Nazi war machines after our heroes, as they attempt to start a revolution in the very heart of America.

Destiny 2

The end game (or lack thereof) of Destiny 2 might have got the fan base into a bit of a anger-throwing frenzy, but until you reach that point Destiny 2 is a fine video game. While the campaign's missions are far more fun to play solo than the original game’s, group play in strikes and raids is where the heart of Destiny 2 lies. Casual players, sadly, may never experience the joys of completing a raid, but those who do can revel in the glory. Destiny 2 looks pretty smart, too, and has Xbox One X support. Far from perfect, but definitely one of the best Xbox One games of 2017.

What Remains of Edith Finch

What Remains of Edith Finch appears numerous times in our games of 2017 features, and each time we will pretty much say the same. In this case, What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the best Xbox One games of 2017, but please don’t read too much about it before you play. The game falls into the ‘walking sim’ genre and can be completed in an evening, so if a short but enthralling masterclass on interactive storytelling takes your fancy, give this a go as soon as you have the chance.

Resident Evil 7

Even without VR, Resident Evil 7 is one of the best Xbox One games of 2017. Moving the series to first-person, Capcom successfully injected life into a series that had started to rot worse than its undead enemies. Resi 7 has it all: atmosphere, scares, horror, puzzles, and action. A few wrong turns doesn’t prevent Capcom’s survival horror game from being a brilliant return to form. Resident Evil 7 Gold is a great way to experience the complete package, including the premium DLC.

Path of Exile

If Diablo 3 had been released in 2017 it would be on this list, but as it wasn’t there is a place for the very Diablo 3-like Path of Exile. While the game from Grinding Gear Games feels a little clunky compared to the super slick Diablo 3, it’s crucially free to play and a very good example of how to make that system work. Some of the menus are a bit complicated and there’s an awful lot to take in, but Path of Exile doesn’t bludgeon you with requests to pay for things using real money. If you do hand over cash, it’s because you felt it was worth it.

Assassin's Creed Origins

Truly taking advantage of the power that the Xbox One X has to offer, sailing up the Nile in Assassin’s Creed Origins will convert even the most ardent graphics sceptic. Assassin’s Creed Origins was the breath of fresh air that the storied franchise needed, giving us a vast swath of Egypt to explore, as well as a completely overhauled combat and loot system. It’s far from the perfect game, but Assassin’s Creed Origins has nonetheless made the franchise relevant again.

Injustice 2

Bringing a massive roster of DC superheroes and villains together for the second time, Injustice 2 is undoubtedly one the best Xbox One games of 2017, standing confidently in the upper reaches of fighting games released this year. On top of the solid fighting game at the core of Injustice 2, you’ve also got a competent story mode which pits some of the most famed DC characters against one another in a battle for control over Earth.

PUBG - PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

After taking the PC market by storm, PUBG arrives on Xbox One just before the end of the year. For now the only console you’ll be able to play PUBG on is the Xbox One, so this is a pretty big deal for Microsoft and Xbox gamers. With the same thrilling ‘hunt or be hunted’ gameplay there’s no doubt that PUBG is one of the best Xbox One games of 2017. As it’s in early access, perhaps it’ll be one of the best Xbox One games of 2018 too? We’ll have to wait and see.
