FIFA 18 Chemistry Guide

Chemistry is something you’re going to need to get your head round if you want any chance of success in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team. In the sections that follow we’ll detail what Chemistry is, how you can change chemistry in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team, and what the benefits/penalties of good/bad chemistry are in Ultimate Team.

What is Chemistry in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team

Chemistry is pretty complex when you really delve into it, but the basics should be quite simple to understand. Chemistry is essentially how well your team plays together, which is made up of Individual Chemistry and Team Chemistry. There are also chemistry modifier cards, which you can read all about on our Chemistry Styles guide. We recommend you get to grips with the info on this page first, though.

Chemistry Types in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team

Fifa 18 Ultimate Team Individual Player Chemistry can be seen next to position. Aim for at least 7/10.
  • Individual Player Chemistry - Scored out of 10 for every player in your team.
  • Team Chemistry - Scored out of 100 for the team as a whole.
  • Overall Chemistry - This hidden value is a combination of Individual Chemistry and Team Chemistry.

High Overall Chemistry is key to giving your players attribute boosts, while low Overall Chemistry will have the opposite effect.

While the maths behind chemistry in FIFA 18 hasn’t been released, in FIFA 17 it was the Individual Chemistry for players that mattered the most, with these numbers being far more important that Team Chemistry. Both play into the final value, but if you have to choose one over the other, make sure your players are as close to that 10 rating as possible.

How to Increase Individual Chemistry and Team Chemistry in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team

FIFA 18 Chemistry is all about the colors.

There are a number of ways to increase a player’s Individual Chemistry in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team. It just so happens that most of these also increase Team Chemistry in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team. We’ve detailed them for you below. As a rule, Red is bad, Orange is OK, and Green is good.

  • Player Position - Look for the player’s position under their card. Farly logically, red means the player is out of position, orange means the player is not in their ideal position but can play there, and green means the player is in their ideal position. Red will decrease Individual and Team Chemistry, while Green will increase Individual and Team Chemistry.
  • Fifa 18 Ultimate Team Chemistry Lines
  • Links Between Players - The lines between players on your formation view will either be Red, Orange, or Green. The color is determined by how many of the following the linked players have in common: club, league, and nationality. None in common is Red, One in common is Orange, and two or more in common is Green. Red decreases Individual and Team Chemistry, Orange increases both, while Green increases both even more than Orange. As each player can have more than one link going to them, you’ll need to have an overall positive result to get a chemistry boost.
  • Fifa 18 Ultimate Team Manger and Loyalty Bonuses.
  • Manager - Players and Team will receive a chemistry boost if they share nationality or league with the manager, indicated by the tie icon on the player card.
  • Loyalty - This one is the easiest to control. When a player has played 10 games for your club they will receive an Individual Chemistry boost of one point. The shield icon on their card will show if you’ve earned this.

FIFA 18 Chemistry - The Maths Behind Chemistry in FIFA 18 Ultimate Team

While the basics of FIFA 18’s Chemistry in Ultimate Team will be enough for most players, EA released details on exactly how the system worked behind the scenes for FIFA 17 - and it’s expected to work very similarly in FIFA 18.

According to FIFA 18’s creators, EA, the effects of Chemistry are applied to players at the start of a game. The effects are determined by a combination of Team and Individual Chemistry.

  • A player in the starting XI: 25% from Team Chemistry & 75% from Individual Player Chemistry.
  • A player who comes on as a substitute: 25% from Team Chemistry & 75% from Static Individual Player Chemistry of 5.

Subs will benefit from being in a team that has high chemistry, but they won’t benefit from the effects of individual chemistry.

Formula for the effects of Chemistry on Player Attributes:

  • (Team Chemistry*.25) + ((Player Chemistry*10)*.75)

Calcualtion Number Explained

  • If the result is greater than 50, players’ attributes start to improve towards their maximum of 99.
  • If the result is 50, the number is neutral and the player receives no changes from their base attributes.
  • If the result is 49 or lower, the players’ attributes are reduced towards their minimum of 1.

If that all seems a bit complicated, don’t worry about it too much. You’ll still be able to have a good time with FIFA 18 Ultimate Team without understanding every detail about how the calculations are made.
