The SNES Classic Mini is reportedly entering production as a follow-up to Nintendo’s hugely popular but understocked NES Classic Mini. With production of the NES Mini now ceased and the console exceedingly hard to get hold of, all attention now turns to the 16-bit era follow-up. Here’s everything we know about the SNES Classic Mini, including release date, price, and when you can pre-order. Based on what Nintendo did with the NES Classic Mini we can put together a pretty good idea on what the SNES Classic Mini will offer and when the SNES Classic Mini will be released.
SNES Classic Mini Release Date
The SNES Classic Mini is reportedly entering production for release in time for Christmas 2017. The NES Classic Mini released on November 11, 2016, so a sensible assumption would be for the SNES Classic Mini to launch on November 10, 2017 (or somewhere in that region). The console hasn’t even been officially revealed by Nintendo yet, but the NES Classic was announced in July 2016.
SNES Classic Mini Price
Although not yet officially announced, we can speculate that the SNES Classic Mini will be priced in line with that of the NES Classic. $59.99/£49.99 would make sense.
SNES Classic Mini Games
The NES Classic came pre-loaded with 30 classic games from the 8-bit era. If the SNES Classic Mini includes the same number and picks similar franchises we speculate that it will include the key games in the Super Mario and Donkey Kong Country series, along with the heavy hitters from Nintendo (such as Super Metroid, Zelda, and F-Zero) and a small number of third-party publishers.
The following games could be included with the SNES Classic:
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG
- Donkey Kong Country
- Donkey Kong Country 2
- Donkey Kong Country 3
- Chrono Trigger
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Secret of Mana
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Mega Man X
- Super Castlevania IV
- R-type III
- Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
- Final Fantasy IV, V or VI
Super Mario All-Stars would be a good inclusion, but as it’s a collection of remakes of NES games it might be too similar to what was included with the NES Classic. It’s probably also safe to assume that we won’t get any licensed titles, such as the many popular games based on movies of the era.
Games that use the Super FX microchip, such as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island might also miss out.
SNES Classic Mini Pre-order
No retailers are currently taking pre-orders for the SNES Classic Mini, although you should get an order in as soon as they do if the stock situation for the NES Classic is anything to go by. Stock was in short supply from day one and the console was never readily available. The NES Classic was discontinued less than a year after its release, so don’t expect the SNES Classic to hang around for long.
Bonus: We also imagine a (good) Genesis Classic Edition.
