Axe of the Blood God Episode 28: Disgaea 5 and Other Strategy RPGs

Mike drops by to share his thoughts on Disgaea's legacy over the past decade, the challenges facing NIS, and what he likes to see in a strategy RPG.

Column by Kat Bailey, .

Axe of the Blood God is our weekly RPG podcast hosted by Kat Bailey. You can find the show notes for previous episodes here.

In this week's episode of Axe of the Blood God (download link here), Mike joins Kat to talk about the Disgaea series, the challenges facing NIS, and what he likes to see in a good strategy RPG

Along the way, we kind of realize that there's been a fair number of good strategy RPGs over the past few years, including the criminally underrated Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars for the Nintendo 3DS (no, really, it's great!). Mike is very partial for this genre, so it's great to hear his thoughts on Disgaea in particular, a cult favorite that tends to be overlooked by the mainstream press these days. You can read his review of Disgaea 5 here.

I already have over 80 hours of gameplay in on this game because my progress on the demo transferred over. I definitely can tell that I'll be getting the platinum trophy for Disgaea 5. I haven't even come close to finishing the main story yet, although I've unlocked 2 of the bad endings so far. Each new feature totally distracts me with exploring it as I unlock them. But, as a huge fan of the franchise, I always knew this one would be right up my alley. I just wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is.

Listening to this now, but a minor correction before I forget: Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax technically takes its characters from light novels, hence the name of a major Japanese publisher in the title. Almost all of which, of course, have anime adaptations, which makes it easy to think otherwise.

My only issue with Disgaea 5 is that it's not on a handheld. Handhelds are pretty much the best thing ever to happen to SRPGs.

As someone who loves srpgs, I can't understand the love for Ghost Recon. It's pretty middling. Not to mention that if there is any game whose race/gender stereotyping needs a nice long unpacking/evisceration, this would be it. God, I could write an essay on the lengths the game goes to in order to telegraph that there is no possible romance between the black male heavy and white fem medic. A terrible essay, but an essay

I notice two things about NI. One, that they didn't put a Disgaea on PC (wtf?!?) despite the first being ported to everything including toasters. Two, that Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom get no love and Disgaea has some death grip on anyone with knowledge about the company.

Mike, Kat's definately right: it sounds safe, but then they could end up like Starfish here. It's exceedingly dangerous. Capcpom and Tecmo found this out in the character action arena as well. I'm not sure how to fix this other than "make people respect your output" like what From and Paradox and all them crazies do.

What don't you like about Wizardries, exactly?
