Axe of the Blood God: Our Stormblood Review, Breath of the Wild DLC, and More

PODCAST | Does Final Fantasy XIV's expansion push it forward? The Blood God has a verdict!

Article by Kat Bailey, .

Axe of the Blood God is our weekly RPG podcast hosted by Kat Bailey and Nadia Oxford. You can find the previous episodes here.

In this week's episode of Axe of the Blood God (download link here), we review Final Fantasy XIV's latest expansion, talk about Breath of the Wild's DLC, and more!

Final Fantasy XIV is an interesting cause of an online game gaining traction outside of the traditional MMORPG audience. Yes, you still have people who are in it for the raids, the loot, and all the rest, but there are plenty of others who just like being in the Final Fantasy universe. Stormblood is for them, and we talk about the ways in which it succeeds and the ways in which it still has room to grow.

We also talk a little bit about Falcom's remarkable longevity, their shift to the PlayStation 4, and where consoles stand in Japan. And of course, we have some Breath of the Wild chatter, too!

Show Description

Kat and Nadia band together once more to talk about the Breath of the Wild DLC and a recent interview with Nihon Falcom president Toshiro Kondo. Then Mike Williams comes aboard to review Stormblood, and to talk about the state of MMORPGs in general (30:42). And, of course, we've got more listener mail! (1:06).

Music from Axe of the Blood God is courtesy of Lena Chappelle, who has also contributed the themes to Active Time Babble and Roleplayers' Realm. I also use music from the RPG Music Pack over at rpgmaker.net. Check it out!

I am such a slowpoke. I should've mentioned Nadia's essay on Valkyria Chronicles and Jewish Representation, as it reminded me of Kevin Wong's essay on Sleeping Dogs, especially how an outsider's take can make an exiled view of of their culture so much more valued.

The FFIII translation I am using is called "Final Fantasy VI Relocalization Project". It's heavily based on the GBA translation.

WoW's story started showing cracks about a decade ago, but really jumped the shark with "there has to be a Lich King".

And no, don't listen to the dullards thinking it wasnt good before, it was competant before and can't reach that any more.

I very much agree about the positivity of Nihon Falcom's games. The night I came home after Trump got elected I went straight to playing some Trails in the Sky because I needed something bright and cheery. In the months that followed the colourful world of Ys VIII where a bunch of people get shipwrecked (and then actually work together to survive!) often helped me cheer up. Effective strategy for political action? No. But it did make me feel better...

Always enjoy AotBG. Would be great if Mike could start being a steady third chair on the show. Is that possible? =)

The more I hear about XIV, the more I wish it wasn't an MMO with an attacked subscription fee, because it sounds like something I could otherwise get into. Well, that, and my inconsistent internet connection.Edited July 2017 by Lord-Bob-Bree

If you're still looking for a title for the new USG podcast, might I suggest: "State of Play". Get it? United States Gamer? Gameplay?

    I await my check !
