Some MMOs never die, and Lord of the Rings Online is one of them. The massive multiplayer online game first launched in 2007, a literal decade ago, without a key area. But that changes later this month on July 31—Lord of the Rings Online is finally heading to the place where no one dares to venture except for daring hobbits and ugly orcs: Mordor.
The adequately titled Mordor expansion, the MMO's sixth expansion, won't just arrive packing a haunting new locale, but will bring along with it 300 new quests for players. The expansion will also introduce a brand new "allegiance" system, where players can pledge their allegiance to a particular faction for exclusive rewards. The expansion will also toss in a new race, the High Elves, a level boost, plus more things to craft and gear.
This is the first expansion of the game in four years, with the game's fifth expansion being Helm's Deep in 2013. Lord of the Rings Online may be a free-to-play game, but in order to trot through Mordor you'll need to pay $39.99 for the base pack. You can see the developers walking through some of the expansion in a video below. If you're still hungry for Lord of the Rings-related games, then you're in luck, because the open world action game Middle-Earth: Shadow of War releases this October.
