In a post on the Overwatch forums, principal designer Geoff Goodman announced that Mercy's Valkyrie ultimate will no longer make Resurrect instant or grant a bonus charge of Resurrect. In addition, Mercy's speed boost as part of Guardian Angel has been decreased by 50 percent, and the duration of the entire Ultimate has been reduced from 20 seconds to 15 second.
These nerfs come off the heels of previous nerfs to her Ultimate ability which added an interruptible charge-up time to her Resurrect ability. But Blizzard says that even with those previous nerfs, her Valkyrie ability was enough to make-up for those previous changes. "Additionally, we're toning back the amount of mobility Valkyrie provides through Guardian Angel and reducing its duration to overall reduce the power of this ability," writes Goodman.
if u think the new mercy nerf is bad just wait till the next one where they make it so when you use her ult, jeff kaplan himself appears behind her and beats her to death with a bat right there in the middle of the game— seabies (@radicalseabies) January 5, 2018
The reaction online to her nerf has been equal part despair and rejoicing. Opinion is divided between players who believe that Mercy has been the subject to ever-and-ever debilitating nerfs, and players who say that these changes to her character need to happen until she's finally balanced. One thread on Reddit even reminded players that Mercy already received four major changes previously, and she's still a mandatory pick.
Ana mains after seeing this HUUUUGE Mercy nerf... pic.twitter.com/cSCD0RfcLg— Your Overwatch (@YourOverwatchYT) January 5, 2018
We all knew a nerf was needed but this is way too much. Moreover, playing Mercy will be the most boring thing as we can no longer make a difference. Prepare to get reported for playing Mercy because we’re about to be a troll tier pick far, far below where Torb and Symm ever were.— Animetic (@Animetic) January 5, 2018
Meanwhile there are plenty of disgruntled Mercy mains who are frustrated that their favorite character is subject to continuous changes, most of which have made the character weaker. Mercy mains also have sounded off on other Overwatch characters who are in much more need of nerfs than Mercy, like Junkrat.
Me: please fix doomfist he knocks me across the fucking map and into the shadow realm. Blizz: Here's another Mercy nerf! Now when you press E you straight up just die! Me:— Taako's good out here @AslinnCosplay) January 5, 2018
In here real quick to say: The new Mercy nerf absolutely kills her for good. I would understand maybe increasing the Rez time during Valk but also limiting it to one charge is extremely dumb and unnecessary— new year vic (@TheDamnThinGuy) January 5, 2018
Coincidentally, Junkrat was the other character to receive a nerf with the upcoming PTR update. His Concussion Mine will now deal less damage if a target is further away from the blast center. Goodman says that this is so that Junkrat players will have to be more accurate with their mine throws without sacrificing the damage dealt by the mines.
As we've come to see, Blizzard does not mess around when it comes to balancing Overwatch. Since launch, there have been wholesale revisions of entire characters just to make the game more fair. And even then, PTR changes are where Blizzard fine tunes its balancing decisions, so the Mercy nerf is subject to change based on feedback.
