Skulls of the Shogun Freed from Windows 8 Exclusivity

17-Bit's strategy game finally heads to Steam, away from Microsoft's walled garden.

Have you been waiting to play Skulls of the Shogun, but you didn't want to use Windows 8? Developer 17-Bit has announced that the game is finally coming to Steam. The team has gone back to the original title and spruced it up with some new features, renaming it Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition. If you've already bought Skulls of the Shogun on the Windows Store, you don't have to feel afraid about double-dipping on Steam.

"We hoped to get some of the original players interested in an expanded port, and while we were doing the straight port, we had time to polish and add features based on feedback of the original title," 17-Bit founder and CEO Jake Kazdal told USGamer.

The Bone-A-Fide Edition features a new four-chapter campaign on the Forgotten Isles, 6 new multiplayer levels, new achievements, the ability to earn experience, and a new character, the Tanuki. The team at 17-Bit feels that the revamped Skulls of the Shogun will lengthen the lifespan of the game.

"The leveling up system should add life to the multiplayer so people stay engaged and our community remains active," said Kazdal. "The Forgotten Isles campaign has persistent unit progression, so if you lose a bunch of characters in the first stage you will start the second stage very weak! It forces a new sort of long-term planning, and these are more difficult maps for experienced players. The emblems give much more personality and customization which we hope will maintain interest and an active MP user base long into the future. We were thrilled to be able to spend time adding and polishing to make the Bone-A-Fide the ultimate edition of this already great game."

The asynchronous multiplayer mode, Skulls Anywhere, will be forward compatible with future versions of Skulls of the Shogun, but Kazdal didn't name any specific platforms. 17-Bit recently announced its second title, Galak-Z, for PlayStation 4, so hopefully a PlayStation Vita port might not be out of the question.

"We are still working on future plans, but we intend to bring the game to as many platforms as time, money and logistics will allow," Kazdal added.

Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-a-Fide Edition is available for pre-order on Steam for a discounted price of $11.99. Pre-ordering the game gets you the multiplayer beta, and not pre-ordering means the game will eventually go back up to its MSRP of $14.99.

Good to hear! I was majorly disappointed by the Win8 exclusivity.

This news is a relief! I've long since handed my 360 off to a relative, and I'm not really interested in Windows 8, so I was pretty sad about not being able to get my hands on this. The preorder price is juuuust right.
