Street Fighter x Tekken Challengers Coming to Super Street Fighter IV [Update]

Five fighters enter the fray next year, and one of them is an all-new character!

News by Mike Williams, .

At an EVO 2013 panel today, Capcom announced that five new fighters will be joining the Super Street Fighter IV roster. Four of the characters have been named: Elena, Rolento, Hugo, and Poison. Avid fighting game fans will recognize those four as characters from Capcom's Street Fighter x Tekken. With the models and movesets already done for those characters, it's probably easier to bring them over with just a bit of balancing on Capcom's part. The last character is an all-new fighter making their debut in the new version.

The new version will be offered as $15 downloadable content, with the five characters and six new stages for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. The full package including the old and new content will be $39.99 at retail.

This will be the fifth version of the Street Fighter IV series, following Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition v. 2012. Capcom will announce the final name of the new version on Sunday, July 14, just before the EVO Super Street Fighter IV finals.

Prior to leaving Capcom for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale developer Superbot Entertainment, designer Seth Killian said that Arcade Edition was the last Street Fighter IV game.

"The plan is this is the end of Street Fighter IV," Killian told Eurogamer at Captivate in 2011. "Arcade Edition will be the end of Street Fighter IV. What comes next? We'll see. But we aren't planning any more Street Fighter IVs."

I guess plans change. I also guess that some people are glad they didn't pick up Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition yet.

Update: The final name of the new version has been revealed as Ultra Street Fighter IV. The announcement trailer is below.

I guess we can count the days until Ultra Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition v.2015?

@SargeSmash Presumably you got it less than $25, at least, in which case it's still cheaper for you to have gotten AE now (and get some practice in! Better that than waiting for this to come out and be even more months behind!) and then the DLC when it hits.

@SargeSmash If you bought it during the Steam sale it will still be cheaper to pick up the DLC.

Hopefully with the advent of the next generation consoles, maybe there is a SF V in the works...

It has also been confirmed that the new stages will be basically ripped straight from Street Fighter X Tekken as well as the characters. Make of that what you will.

"angstygaijin: Any hints on the new fight locales?

Matt Dahlgren: The stages are actually the same ones you saw in SF x T. If you played them in that game, then they’ll look familiar to you."

Also, in regards to the final new character:

"angstygaijin: So back to new SSFIV, can you provide any hints as to who this new character may be? Have we seen this character before, even if it happened to be outside of the Street Fighter franchise?

Matt Dahlgren: You have not seen this character played in any Street Fighter game before. So whether or not it’s a character from that universe or not I can’t say at this time, but I can say for certain that you have never seen this character played in the franchise before."

I think they're hinting at Haggar there. It would complete the Final Fight setup the game has going on. (Guy, Cody, Poison, Hugo, Rolento), and he's technically never been in a Street Fighter game before. Only Marvel vs Capcom. To me, the usage of the terms universe and franchise by Dahlgren makes this even more plausible.
