Virtual-On Returns With A Certain Magical Index Crossover in 2018

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita are getting the oddest series revival ever.

News by Mike Williams, .

Sega has announced a crossover between Cyber Troopers Virtual-On and Dengeki Bunko's A Certain Magical Index light novel series. According to a translation by Gematsu, A Certain Magical Virtual-On (Toaru Majutsu no Virtual-On) is coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in 2018. The title follows a previous crossover light novel of the same title that was release in May 2016.

Everyone seems on board, with A Certain Magical Index author Kazuma Kamachi handling the scripting of the game and Virtual-On series character designer Hajime Katoki doing the mecha designs and other illustrations. The Virtual-On games exist within the fiction of A Certain Magical Index, with the conceit of the light novel and this game being that Index characters will pilot familiar Virtuaroids.

The last release release of a Virtual-On title was Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Marz in 2013 for PlayStation 3. That game itself was a re-release of the earlier PlayStation 2 title. So for hardcore Virtual-On fan, this may represent the only time you'll get to play a modern version of the series.

"A Kind of Virtual On?" Hope it has an English translation like all the other robot games Kat keeps talking about.Edited March 2017 by SIGGYZtar

Ugh. I love Virtual On and their colorful robot designs. Katoki's designs are some of the most charming mecha ever. Shame that all the good stuff is buried beneath these teenagers. Still, nice to see that someone at SEGA still thinks about Virtual On every now and then.

So, um... has it been made clear whether this is an actual arcade-style VO versus action game? Some sort of RPG/Visual Novel/hybrid? Trailer was less than helpful at determining that!

    Also, for what it's worth:
    1) VO Marz is terrrrribbbblllle. I wasn't aware they re-released that piece of trash as a PS2 "Classic" on PS3, that was almost as surprising to me as hearing about this very unusual collaboration!

    2) Virtual On Force is the last actual arcade game (which some elements and game systems in the PS2 Marz were loosely based on), and got a great region free Japanese Xbox 360 release in December 2010. That one is actually worth playing!

SEGA should just make another Virtual On game as a low to mid-budget download game. A slimmed down, yet really fun vs robot fighting game. Understandably the market for a VO might be small these days, so make it a lean and nice little battle game. Don't hide something I like beneath something I absolutely would not ever play.
