Never thought about it before today, but the maps I had to draw for the dungeons in Zelda II really did resemble those in Metroid and SotN. Cool!

@meta-mark that's fair, but remember that the Wii U had (seemingly) tons of third-party support at launch- at that time, even games that were being released concurrently on PS3/360. The fact that it took off was probably due in part to its abysmal marketing, but it genuinely didn't make sense to continue to develop for the system as consumers neglected it.

It's likely that the Switch will have the exact same problem, albeit to a lesser extent. Unless Nintendo finds a way to really hook people with a certain game or feature in the first few months, it's not going to sell units and it's not going to get third-party support. That's why I'm cautiously optimistic that Nintendo may even be planning to drop the price shortly after launch; get the loyalists to install at $300 each, then hook the rest of the population with an affordable console.

If this is the case, it'll be interesting to see how they handle the Virtual Console, if they choose to have one at all beyond the monthly free games.

Fun to imagine what the Switch equivalent of the Ambassador Program would include. 10 N64 games? 5 Gamecube Games? 2 Wii U games? Regardless, I'm hoping for a price drop, or at least a MK8: Deluxe bundle, around E3. Is that too much to ask?

I'm definitely going to hold off on the Switch until May, but that was my original plan, anyway- I won't have time or money for it until this semester ends. I was already sold on the design of the console (and I like the JoyCon design more every time I see it), but I was surprised how many games jumped out at me from the presentation and sizzle reel- I'm itching to try MK8: Deluxe, Skyrim, Ultra Street Fighter, Shin Megami Tensei, and Dragon Quest XI, even though I've never had much interest in the latter four franchises.

Point is, even if it flops as badly as Wii U, the first-year lineup is already better than (or at least equivalent to) the sum of the Wii U library. They're finally doing right by Mario. I can't believe it.

I'm also totally down with the hardware design- despite the flak the joycons are getting, I think they look pretty comfortable (and I've got pretty large hands). It'll be worth it for Mario Odyssey and MK8 Deluxe alone, but I still think it has the potential to be the ultimate "Virtual Console" console- especially with two built-in, retro-compatible controllers. Sure, the price tag is too high and last night's presentation left something to be desired, but they sold me on the concept all the same. Excited to pick one up this summer.

Anticipating a pretty fast price-drop: making as much money as they can on pre-orders, then down to $249.99 for holiday season & Mario Odyssey

I sold my Wii U, but I wouldn't even hesitate shell out $60 to play DKC: Tropical Freeze again... or better yet, an HD package of both DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze. Honestly, I'll take 2D Kongs over 2D Mario Bros. every time.

Re: Mario 3D World, I doubt they would re-release it at launch if we're getting a brand new Super Mario entry in March, but it'll probably show up on VC within the year.

Just a heads-up: Nibel (on twitter) also posted this news yesterday, but took it down because there was an apparent misunderstanding:

However, the consensus seems to be that $249.99 is accurate.
