The wintry area in Secret of Mana, the snowfields in Soul Blazer, and basically the entire game of Kickle Cubicle.

A good game, to be sure, but overrated. Doesn't even crack my top 5 for the year. Make Hyrule a bit smaller, lop off half the shrines, add about four or five classical "themed" dungeons- it'd be almost perfect.

I'll tell you one thing, though: I never wanted a Zelda-themed cooking game more.

Thanks for the review. Seems like what I wanted from a Battlefront sequel - better maps, better vehicle combat - is front and center here; I'm fairly indifferent to the loot box fiasco. Looking forward to firing this one up tomorrow.

The beta felt fine. Just wish there would have been another GA map besides Naboo.

I always thought it was a reference to the pale horse ridden by Death in the Book of Revelations.

It does make me long for the days of EGM and the like, where multiple people would review a game. Sure, they were just blurbs, but you grew to understand what genres and games a particular reviewer liked, and you could gauge the scores accordingly. If your own sensibilities lined up with a particular reviewer, you knew to consider his/her scores and review with more weight than someone else's.

The more I think about it, the more I think single-reviewer reviews are not entirely useful. I'm not convinced multiple full-length reviews would be useful either but "Another Take" sidebar mini-reviews wouldn't be a bad thing.

I was taken by the Nintendo Power marketing material, some of which I still have, and I rented the game at first opportunity in the small town I lived in. Considering no one else I talked to had any interest, I'm pretty sure I was the first person to rent it. My brother and I made a marathon run through; it was an instant classic and remains one of my favorite games. Everything about it resonated, and it had a kind of dark, quirky charm that would not be popular in American culture until well into the 2000s, after memes grabbed hold of everyone and everyone's sense of humor became informed by irreverence and irony.

If you're in the States, you got Chrono Trigger and Earthbound both in the same year. 1995 was incredible for that alone.

Also, obligatory RIP Satoru Iwata. Earthbound (Mother 2) doesn't exist without him.Edited September 2017 by Unknown

@LBD_Nytetrayn Agreed. Castlevania 2 is fantastic, and my favorite of the NES games. I always appreciated the exploration aspect but also that it's just a darker, more gothic game, which pushed all the right buttons for my kid self. I know Castlevania and C3 were going for a more tongue-in-cheek Universal Monsters approach but I preferred the darker, more serious interpretation.

My stepdad used to race motocross in his youth; he loved ExciteBike. We also played through large portions of The Legend of Zelda together and he was the first person I ever saw down Mike Tyson in Punch-Out. As a teenager, I would get into "Beat my time on this track!" battles with him in Diddy Kong Racing.

Also, for reasons I still don't understand because neither one likes basketball or hockey, my mom and stepdad would play ridiculous amounts of Double Dribble and Ice Hockey. Mom always won.
