in terms of fond memories I think I always look back on the losers that I chose with a twinkle in my eye.
Turbo Duo, 3DO, Saturn. The only games I have for those systems are the actual ones you'd want to play. The excitement each of them provided was really the anticipation of what they promised.
I was really excited for the Saturn and the 3DO. Never quite paid off (Saturn was actually pretty good) but man flipping through EGM and looking at what I would soon have was the best part of gaming. That seems sad so I'll take it all back and just say SNES because of Squaresoft.

@prymusferal haha that was my first answer! I knew PC had to pop up and to be fair it has the most "firsts" in my gaming history. First adventure game, first RPG, first case of dysentery (damn you Oregon Trail!), first online gaming experience (Ultimate Online), and a metric ton of emulating GBA and the games in my retro collection I don't want to open up and damage.
It's an honest an fair answer really.

    Cipher- Every RPG ever
I like the person that you play as, its the most Role Play part of Role Playing Games. The more silent they are, the better, you get to fill in the gaps

I fired up Xenoblade via my now defunct Gamefly account and man...I knew the game had some top tier potential but after 3 hours of playing I also knew I just don't have the time or patience for that scale of a game. I've become too old and busy for RPGs... (Sadness emoji) (sushi emoji for no reason)

2014 was almost the first year I didn't play Suikoden 2 since its inception but then PSN just pulled me back in and now my physical copy can be sealed in plastic and put on a shelf forever...sign...spoiler alert...

Finally, a good piece of evidence to throw at my friends who claim the "golden age of arcades" was the early 90s.
Certainly a good time for arcades, but more of a silver age compared to those good old pre-NES cabinets.

when you get to Suikoden 2, can one of the experienced players (Jeremy or Bob?) try out the Matilda Glitch/cheat just to compare to the straight forward run through everyone else will do?
The last 3 times I've played through S2 (yes, I have played that game more than thrice) I've done that glitch and it's always fun to me for some reason to get Humphrey & Futch so early in the game and to be OP for half of the story.
Also, good luck scoring Anita in Muse I just tried it and botched the timing I guess go see her right after Elza gives you the packages but maybe before she shoots at Clive?

It's so funny to think of the first time I played this game. I was killing time waiting for I think FF7 (maybe 8...) and I needed that JRPG fix.
I had no idea what the castle meant when I first sailed across the straight from what is it, Kaku village? Once I finished off that disturbingly hard zombie boss it was like Christmas all over again. I get to do what now with this castle? Add rooms and characters and shops and make it into a bustling town?
It's weird that the imperial navy just abandoned that castle, that makes no sense. Also, that all happened inside Tir's lifetime so why does it look like an ancient abandoned fortress?
The castle in Suikoden 2 makes slightly more sense since Neclord filled it with zombies (spolier alert) although the map looks completely different from when you attack Neclord versus when you control the castle.
