I've never really been stellar when it comes to competitive games, but I wound up being pretty great at the online mode of Tetris DS of all things.

Also, I'm currently undefeated for over 100 Brain Age: Concentration Training street passes. Not the most glamorous game to be champ of, but champ nonetheless.

It's cool that they reached and spoke with locals for inspiration. Now can we please re-design T. Hawk. (at least give him a more specific origin than "Native American") Imagine if the other characters were a group of vague stereotypes from the people of an entire continent rather than a single country of origin.

Now I'm even more glad I waited. I'd much rather have the standard NN3DS, and my Original 3DS's top screen is stuck on full brightness, so it's time to upgrade.

There's something horribly wrong when your corporate culture sounds like a charismatic cult in a downward spiral. I have no idea how executive management works in Japan, but the only hope I see for Konami is for investors and customers to demand that new executives take over the company.

Can we get@bobservo to flex his Something Awful muscle and write a mock petition to stop the "slap in the face to fans" that Super Mario Bros. 2 is? I mean it's called Mario Bros. Not, Mario, Luigi, Toadstool and Toad, and they totally "destroyed" the jumping on enemies mechanic pioneered by the iconic Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.

Man oh man, I just can't sympathize with the whole outrage and petition about the game. "This isn't exactly what I wanted, so it must not exist at all" Is pretty much an adult tantrum. Hardly anyone's played the game, maybe it'll be good, maybe it won't, but this is a pretty ugly expression of fandom, and I am a huge Metroid fan.

@Ohoni On one hand, I agree, you don't need diversity in fantasy, you can make a compelling fantasy about a homogeneous culture. In a way, Final Fantasy XIII dealt with that, after all, Cocoon was a thinly veiled stand in for Japan. On the other hand, I would definitely say we need more diverse fantasies. There's such a huge world of inspiration that we can pull from, and yet they tend to be Euro-centric. Once again, Final Fantasy serves as a good example with FFXII's world design based on Classical Mediterranean Culture, and FFX's based on Pacific Island Culture.

Thanks for the recommendation, it seems interesting. I'm interested in stories about the American South too. When I said Mississipian Culture I'm talking waaay back pre-contact.

As always, very interesting article Mike. I agree that CD Projekt RED can be forgiven for not considering diversity when they live in a ethnically homogeneous country. After all, we tend to forgive Japan, 98% Japanese, for forgetting that not everyone is Japanese. I just wish people would stop bringing out the same tired excuses why we can't have diversity in a fantasy setting. It's open and shut, there's no reason why you can't have varied, non-stereotypical characters in a world that is just made up. If Throne of Blood and Ran can do Shakespeare in Japan, then we can certainly play fast and loose with high fantasy.

This is probably a good place to say that I've always wanted someone to make fantasy based on Mississippian Culture or Mesoamerican Culture, there's such rich legend to pull from and SPOILERS: When 90% of the population is wiped out by disease, we are living on a post-apocalyptic continent.

Street pass is great! When I got my 3DS, I never could have guessed my most played game on the system would be this unassuming free application.

Speaking of poetry, I think this is relevant to gamer and nerd culture. Here's a bit of Rumi:

    Suppose you know the definitions
of all substances and their products,
what good is this to you?
Know the true definition of yourself.
    That is essential.
Then, when you know your own definition, flee from it,
that you may attain to the One who cannot be defined,
    O sifter of the dust.
