Art isn't everything. Controls and gameplay wise, Mario Odyssey is way better than Galaxy. I just played Galaxy for the first time back in December and found it a bit lacking in the controls department.

@link6616 Yeah, first time playing Loom. Slowly working through the old adventure games I missed the first time around. It was interesting, but there was quite the cliff hanger with no resolution.

Also, forgot to mention that I've preordered Alliance Alive for the 3DS, and will have a brand new game to play in just a couple months.

As for most of the USGamer staff not playing the 3DS anymore, that's understandable, reviewers are usually looking forward and playing new games for their job, rather than working through a huge backlog of games like I do. The 3DS still has about 34 games on my backlog, with an estimated 1083 hours of playtime, so it'll be a long time before I clear them all out.

I don't replay games much either, but there's still a lot unfinished.

(Don't get me started on my 300+ game Vita backlog... -_- )

If you add up all the hours between 3DS and DS games last year, the 3DSXL was my 3rd most played console. It trailed a lot behind the PS4 and PSVita, but it was more than double the playtime of my Switch, which only managed 6th place on my list. PS3 was 4th, Wii U was 5th (Because of Zelda: BOTW on Wii U.) It's not unusual for me to not play a brand new console as much as the others, because usually they have a much thinner library of games, and aside from Super Mario Odyssey, Picross S, and Cave Story+, none of the games have grabbed me much.

This year so far, it's Wii U, PS4, Switch, Linux, 3DS, Vita, PS2. The middle 4 consoles are all within a couple hours of each other, so the rankings don't amount to much. I'll probably play an hour on the 3DS tonight and push it all the way to 3rd place on the list. Playing 5 hours of PS4 today pushed it from 6th up to 2nd place, and it will probably reclaim the #1 slot before the end of the month because I'm working on Tokyo Xanadu eX+.

Dragon Quest XI. Very little contest there.

Ohh, discussing winter vacation gaming. Lets see...

I finished the Ratchet and Clank platinum trophy, Danganronpa V3, Live a Live (imported SNES), Doki Doki Literature Club, Tacoma, Loom, Bound, Analogue: A Hate Story, Back to Bed, and Capsized.

    I was pretty busy.

I don't really keep track of what year the games I play came from. I'm constantly playing old games from my backlog, but here's my top 10 games and 6 other games I counted as Great from the 96 games that I've finished this year.

10: What Remains of Edith Finch. Impressive visuals, entertaining minigames, and interesting architecture.
9: Oxenfree. Love the radio gimmick, and the conversation writing was quite good. Nice artwork as well.
    8. Opus Magnum. Top notch puzzle game where you make machines that assemble molecules in an Aristotelian world.
    7. Hotel Dusk: Room 215. The gimmick to turn the DS sideways to simulate a notebook, and really the entire story and interaction with other characters makes this a very interesting adventure game.
    6. Xenogears. Excellent RPG, and I actually preferred the VN style ending to most of the rest of the game. I think more games should try this style, little snippets of RPG surrounded by story, rather than lots of plodding around.
    5. Disgaea 5. They really do keep improving this series, and 5 is probably the best one yet. Others have some elements that are better, but this comes together quite well.
    4. Nier Automata. Very solid combat, and an interesting art style and world. Look forward to seeing more from the director and studio.
    3. Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A bit aimless, but packed with interesting stuff.
    2. Final Fantasy XV. There's so much to do in this game. It's maybe not as strategic or hard as older FF games, but the sheer amount of fun content, makes this one worth playing.
    1. Persona 5. This one's a masterpiece of UI design, level design, and combat. While the characters might not be as interesting as 4, they're still solid enough to keep the game on top.

Runners up: Headlander, Tokyo Jungle Mobile, Nova-111, Disgaea D2, Night in the Woods, Danganronpa V3

I haven't finished DRv3 yet, but it might end up on my list too when I do. Edith Finch matches my list, as well as the same 3 games that were on Kat's list that matched mine. Night in the woods was also just outside of my top 10, it's quite a good game.

I played the most games on PS4. Even if I played Mario Odyssey and moved my zelda playing from Wii U to Switch, that would have only brought the switch up to 2nd-3rd area with the Vita and PS3. Nier Automata, Persona 5, FF15, 3 of my top 5 games were on PS4, and only 1 was on Switch, and I didn't even play it there. (I count FF15 as a 2017 game, it came out too late in 2016, just as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be a 2018 game for me.)

(Also, the only Mario game I played this year was Super Mario Galaxy, which landed at #39th on my list out of 94 games.)
