    I might be wrong but I don't see high-level racing competition as having the same sort of mass appeal that multiplayer games like Destiny and COD do. In those, the feedback of succeeding from minute-to-minute is very immediate. You shoot someone in the head, you get loot, you grow in level, etc. In a racing game like this, all the cars (i.e. the loot?) have to be about equivalent, and you succeed not by offing enemies but by ... braking at the right moment. You succeed with temperance. And unlike Destiny you can't win with friends, you either compete against them or make a hand-shake deal in which you help each other win. I just don't see how a GT that elides the rpg elements has a chance to succeed.

    .... that makes me strike on an idea. What if it replaced the levels of Destiny with its classic progression of Civic-to-GT40. And there's plainly a ceiling to that, so how about 'seasons'? In each season everyone starts with a POS '80s used car and has to climb up tiers, and by the end of the season only the best drivers are at the Le Mans tier racing exclusively against each other? (I'd probably be stuck at a middle tier with a Lancer) THAT'S the only way this would be interesting to me. Might just be me, though.

    The Elder Scrolls games are not good at anything. Not one thing. The stories suck, the combat sucks, the writing is dull, the graphics are sub-par (when you actually look at them up-close), there's no balance (get to level 20 and you're a god), the character progression systems are broken, the weapons are boring, movement is floaty, the NPC's in this 'dynamic sandbox' have zero personality and don't do anything, etc. etc. etc.

    They get by on quantity, and that's it. To name one of these games a 'best of' anything is like calling McDonald's the best restaurant in the world because there are more of them than anything else.

    I mean, sure, there's a tiny demographic that won't have the same nostalgia for the SNES, but ... were those people the reason the NES sold out? I think there's a far larger demographic that's like me: I AM more nostalgic for the NES (which I grew up on) but I wasn't interested in buying the Classic because I KNEW I wouldn't have any fun playing it. I would have a shitload of fun playing the SNES Classic. That's the system where video games started getting legitimately good. It would have better games, and better word-of-mouth.

If you're destined to succeed, then why make any effort? Even the later Mass Effect games suffered from this; "

    It absolutely does this! This is the focus of the beginning of the game. It's a Bioware game, this is how they tell stories. Your bloody name is 'Shepard'.

    "Mass Effect positions you, as an individual and a human being, as the underdog."

    The game repeatedly tells you you're an underdog but never actually makes you feel it. You are a super-awesome war hero (without being shown why). You are told you're chosen, and the Council chooses you, and you go off and do whatever you want.

    And I would argue that the storytelling is just generally bad. Lots of telling and little showing. The premise of the plot is tremendous, with these Lovecraftian bioships waiting in the depths of space … so the game starts by displaying in broad daylight the entirety of one of them, telling you it's enormous (it's about average as far as sci-fi ships go), and not giving it anything terrifying to do. The hive-cleavage-lady was an interesting character … who, immediately after explaining, the game thrusts at you with a generic boss battle, and that's the last of her. You give Sovereign a call and, and he's like 'Cool! I'll just explain the entirety of our galactic plan!' Which is the sort of thing that would be fine if they'd actually stuck to that 'old sci-fi pulp' vibe they said they were attempting and made it a little tongue-in-cheek … but that isn't actually in the DNA of this game. It's very earnest and drab.

    I'll give them credit for attempting it, and for injecting *some* moral complexity into the game, so perhaps history will look at this as an important step in the evolution of game storytelling ... but we shouldn't be looking at it *now* as a success. We should be past it. There are way too many flaws in it. And not the kind of flaws exhibited by, say, MGS, which I hate but is at least a creative, idiosyncratic work by an auteur, but the kind of flaws of just being bad at a bunch of stuff that it believes it's great at.

    It's not the same as FF13, because the problem with that game was that its linearity prevented you from feeling involved in its world. That game made me realize how important a 'town' is, because it paces the action by just allowing you to 'interact' with its universe. FF13 fundamentally misunderstood how RPGs should work.

    FF15, at the very least, gives you the first chunk of the game to melt into its world. And that's a vast improvement ... but the time jump thing is very concerning. If players actions in the 'past' don't affect the future then this is going to be another example of the plot-makers being so ambitious that they stop respecting how the player's investment in the game's interactivity should be MARRIED to the story's progression, not divorced from it.
