The Elder Scrolls Blades Tips - What to Do First, Can Your Phone Run it?

Blades squeezes the Bethesda RPG experience you know and love into a bite size package. Here’s everything you need to know about The Elder Scrolls Blades.

Bethesda revealed The Elder Scrolls Blades last year, and it has finally started to roll out for some players. It is a sleek, distilled version of games like Skyrim and Oblivion, with a heavy emphasis on dungeon-crawling and a clever town building mechanic. If you’ve played an Elder Scrolls game before, you’ll be right at home, though there are a few new elements and control schemes to get your head around. To help you ease into the game’s groove as quickly as possible, we’ve put together this The Elder Scrolls Blades Guides Hub. It’s where you’ll find all of our The Elder Scrolls Blades guides content, as well as some helpful tips on making the most of your time with the game.

The Elder Scrolls Blades Tips

While The Elder Scrolls Blades features the same core mechanics as its predecessors, the translation to mobile devices has added a few new elements that you’ll need to get used to. You’ll likely fumble with the combat at first, and touchscreen controls will always need a little time before they click. To help you out, we’ve listed our The Elder Scrolls Blades Tips below:

  • Get the fire spell as soon as possible, it is extremely overpowered early on
  • Remember to claim your challenges in the Quest menu
  • If you want to temper a weapon, you’ll need to wait a certain amount of time before it is completed. This means you’ll be without said weapon, and will also be unable to repair equipment until the process is done.
  • You can press and hold abilities until you are ready to release and use them. This is useful for enemies that offer a short window for attack.
  • Explore the environment after completing a mission, as this will allow you to make sure you’ve not missed anything.
  • Make sure to open any wooden Chests before anything rarer; you cannot open another chest while one is in the process of unlocking.
  • Keep an eye out for secrets, they tend to be indicated by a glowing shimmer
  • Turn the screen on its side, you can then use the joysticks on the touchscreen to move.

In the list below, you’ll find all of our guides content for The Elder Scrolls Blades. We'll be adding more very soon.

The Elder Scrolls Blades Setting

Many fans have been wondering where in the world The Elder Scrolls Blades is set. It seems as if it is its own region, a sort of amalgamation of a bunch of the previous games. Aesthetically, it’s pretty similar to Skyrim, especially seeing as you spend most of your time in the depths of the game’s many dungeons. The Thalmer, Draugr, Khajit, and Blades all feature, meaning there’s plenty of Elder Scrolls goodness for fans to enjoy here.

The Elder Scrolls Blades Controls

Given that Blades is a mobile game and all, the controls are very different to other games in the series. It’s all handled via the touchscreen, with different areas on the screen reserved for different functions. We’ve listed some info on how the controls work in The Elder Scrolls Blades below:

  • The Shield icon will raise the shield when pressed.
  • Press and hold on the right of the screen to attack. The circle must turn gold for an attack to trigger.
  • Magic is handled by blue icons in the bottom left.
  • Stamina is the green icons to the bottom right.
  • If you are playing in portrait mode, you’ll need to tap to move, and drag the screen to move it.
  • If the screen is in landscape orientation, then the movement joystick can be found at the bottom left.
  • The look joystick is to the bottom right.
  • In the top left, there are icons for menu, quests, and chests.
  • Bethesda is frequently tweaking the prices, wait times, and effects of certain items. Be aware of these future updates.

What to Do First in The Elder Scrolls Blades

You’ll be taken through a brief tutorial when starting out in The Elder Scrolls Blades, but what should you do afterwards? We recommend unlocking the Blacksmith, and taking on the weekly and daily jobs that can be found in the Quest menu. You’ll also want to do any main quests with a rating of three skulls and below. Generally, try to earn as many chests as you can, then work on building houses around the Town to raise its Prestige. You’ll need Town level 2 early on to progress the story, so work on getting to this point. It’s also a good idea to head into The Abyss, as it’s an easy way to earn valuable loot early on.
