Spyro is a much loved franchise that had three instalments on the original PlayStation, before going multiplatform with a string of less-loved games. The original Spyro trilogy was developed by Insomniac (now famous for Ratchet and Clank, Spider-Man), and gained a large fan following. Now Activision and Toys for Bob are bringing the original games to PS4 and Xbox One with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Here's everything we know, including the Spyro Trilogy release date and Spyro Reignited Trilogy Trailer.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy Release Date - PS4 and Xbox One
The Spyro Reignited Trilogy for PS4 release date is September 21, 2018, according to an Amazon listing that has since been tweaked. This is just over 20 years after the first Spyro game released on September 9, 1998. Spyro Trilogy is launching on PS4 and Xbox One, but may launch on other platforms later. It was thought that Spyro Trilogy remakes would be exclusive to PS4 for a year. This doesn't seem to be the case.
Despite offering three games in one package, Spyro Trilogy on PS4 and Xbox One is reportedly priced at $40, which is a bit of a bargain and will no doubt tempt people who are sat on the fence about the remakes. The box art for Spyro Reignited Trilogy on PS4 also appeared on the Amazon page, before being removed.
What is Included in the PS4 and Xbox One Spyro Trilogy
As you might expect from a game called "Spyro Reignited Trilogy", Spyro on PS4 and Xbox One includes all three original games. The three games have all been remastered in HD, so you're getting Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. In total that makes over 100 levels, each with improved gameplay and graphical updates.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy also re-imagines Stewart Copeland's original soundtrack, and the games will feature Tom Kenny, the original voice actor in Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon.
The first screenshots for Spyro Reignited Trilogy have leaked online, and you can see them below. The remake is certainly looking pretty sharp.
A trailer showing off the new graphics in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy for PS4 and Xbox One can be seen below. As you can see, the core game has been completely overhauled, but fans will still recognize all the areas and locations.
Whether the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a Spyro remake or a Spyro remaster is open for debate, but given the huge graphical changes and gameplay enhancements, we'd call it a remake more in-line with the work done on the Shadow of the Colossus PS4 Remake. A remaster would have mostly seen the visuals updated to HD, but the work being done here is far more impressive.
Who are Toys for Bob?
Developer Toys for Bob has been around since the 1990s, but didn't really make a name for itself until it created the original Skylanders game, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. This was followed by Skylanders: Giants, Skylanders: Trap Team,Skylanders: Imaginators, and the Switch port of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. While Spyro fans would have no doubt loved Insomniac to create the Spyro remakes, Toys for Bob does at least have experience with the Spyro franchise.
Is Spyro Reignited Trilogy Coming to Nintendo Switch or PC?
While rumours suggested that the remade Spyro Reignited Trilogy would be coming to PS4 first, then Xbox One and Switch at a later date, the official trailer for the game revealed that is is launching on Xbox One at the same time as PS4. There is currently no word on Spyro Reignited Trilogy coming to Nintendo Switch, but the game did briefly appear on the official Nintendo store, before being removed.
