If you're looking for the previous section of this guide, check out our walkthroough of The Swamp, The Salt Mines and the Lab. You find yourself in the Guest House basement right back where you started the game – trigger the first flashback, then head around the central column opposite the sofa to find the final Mr Everywhere bobblehead sitting on the shelf. Head through the Guest House the same way as before, triggering flashbacks along the way – don't worry, despite appearances, they can't harm you in any way.

After the flashback with the screwdriver, head through the kitchen towards the back door to trigger the next cutscene with Evelyn. Afterwards, turn around and head back through the kitchen and make a right up the stairs to the attic. As you climb the second set of stairs and round the corner you'll see Evelyn on the other side of the attic.

How to defeat Mutated Evelyn in Resident Evil 7

Be careful – as you get closer to her, she'll start blasting powerful waves to knock you back – these can kill you, so make sure to use the block button to protect yourself from the blast every few seconds as you make your way towards her. Once you're close enough, the game will take over and a cutscene will begin.

As soon as you regain control, Evelyn's mutated face will come out of the wall in front of you – this is your cue to unload every weapon you have into it before she gets too close and chews you up. Make sure to back up if she starts getting a little too close for comfort. Once you've done enough damage, a scripted sequence will kick in, and you'll be pushed out of the house to begin the second phase of the battle.

After regaining control, once again shoot everything you've got into her head – preferably your heavier weapons such as your Magnum and Machine Gun are most effective here, though in a pinch if you're out of ammo for everything else – assuming you're fast and accurate enough – even the handgun can do the job. After you've done enough damage, Evelyn will hoist you into the air – keep aiming at her head and keep firing during this point, and keep up the pressure. Eventually, she'll drop you, and in classic Resident Evil style the helicopter above will drop a weapon for you and tell you to use it.

Oblige them by interacting with it to pick it up, and once it's in your hands keep shooting for her face as before, even if she's protecting it with her tentacles. A few shots later, and she'll be done for good and you can enjoy whichever ending you get depending on who you chose to save with the serum earlier in the game.
