God of War Walkthrough

God of War marks the triumphant return of Kratos to the PlayStation, making his debut on the PS4 with this reboot of sorts. Although God of War is the fifth chronological game in the franchise, it’s a brand new story for Kratos, with his son Atreus in the new Norse setting, marking a big switch up from the old formula of Greek Gods. This is a big game, so you're going to want to follow our God of War walkthrough pretty closely.

This God of War reboot drops you straight into the action in a way, as your very first action in the game is to chop down a tree very angrily with Kratos. From here, we’re briefly introduced to Atreus, but God of War is deliberately vague about Kratos’ son, as well as the fate that befell his wife, so don’t think that you’re missing out on some key piece of lore if this is your first God of War game.

Just below, you can find all our individual God of War guides which break down specific areas of the game for you. We’ve got a complete God of War walkthrough, detailing where to find every hidden collectible item in locations like the Wildwoods and River Pass, as well as full God of War walkthrough guides, which will detail how to complete quests as quickly and smoothly as possible.

God of War Story so Far

The God of War franchise is basically split into two eras: the first era takes place in Ancient Greece, while the second era takes on Norse mythology, beginning with the 2018 God of War. In the original God of War released back in 2005, Kratos became the servant of Ares, after being tricked into killing his own family, but was then tasked with finding Pandora’s Box and killing Ares by Athena. After finding Pandora’s Box and killing Ares, Kratos ascends to Mount Olympus to become the new God of War.

God of War 2, released two years later in 2007, sees Kratos betrayed by Zeus, and subsequently joins forces with the Titan Gaia. Kratos then journeys to defeat Zeus, and just as he is about to kill the god, Athena sacrifices herself to save Zeus, revealing Kratos to be the son of Zeus himself. God of War 2 concludes with Kratos joining forces with the Titans to lead an attack on Mount Olympus.

God of War 3 then arrived in 2010, and Kratos finds himself betrayed yet again, this time by the Titans that he so recently allied with. Kratos is then aided by the spirit of Athena, who instructs him to seek the Flame of Olympus to defeat Zeus. Kratos then journeys through the Underworld, battling gods and Titans alike as he goes, until he finally uncovers Pandora’s Box, realising that Pandora herself is the key to pacifying and wielding the flame. Kratos finally kills Zeus once and for all, but refuses to help the spirit of Athena assume her role as guardian of mankind, instead disappearing into the shadows.

Which brings us to God of War 2018. The new installment takes place many years after the conclusion of God of War 3, where Kratos finally defeated all the Greek gods once and for all. He’s since been in hiding with his son Atreus, which is where our latest adventure kicks off.

God of War Tips and Tricks

Before this God of War Walkthrough guide gets into more specifics, here are few quick tips to help you out if you're struggling - especially if you're familiar with the previous games.

  • Throw the Axe - This might seem obvious, but this is new move for Kratos and something that's easy to forget about early on in the game. This is useful if you're being overrun by a group of enemies and want to take them on from a distance.
  • Use Atreus - Atreus is also new to the series and can fire arrows. Use him to help you out and even stun enemies so you can finish them off.
  • Explore - There are secret chests and hacksilver all over the place in God of War. Take your time to explore and smash vases.
  • Consult your abilities on pause menu - There's a lot to take in when you start God of War. Pause the game and look at your abilities to make sure you're making the most of Kratos' moveset.

Firstly, you’ll need to note that Kratos has two forms of attack: through his Leviathan Axe, and with his bare fists. The former is an excellent way to deal out big damage quickly, and you can chain multiple attacks together in quick succession against weaker enemies like Draugr, by following up a few quick attacks with a single heavy attack, slamming your enemy down onto the ground.

However if you instead use your fists, you’ll be building up a ‘stun’ meter on each enemy that you successfully land hits on. If you repeatedly land unarmed attacks on an enemy, you’ll eventually receive a button prompt to press the right analog stick, which will enable Kratos to deliver a massive finishing attack to his enemy. There’s also enemies that won’t be affected by the Leviathan Axe, and these are ice-based enemies, who you’ll know when you see thanks to their icy skin. On these occasions, Kratos will need to switch to unarmed attack to deal any damage.

Blocking is a huge part of the combat of God of War, especially when you’re going up against multiple enemies at once. You’ll want to hold the left bumper to block, and you can execute dodges and rolling dodges while blocking with your shield, allowing you to jump back and deliver a few quick attacks to an enemy. There’s also instances where God of War will go slow-mo for a brief second when an attacking enemy hits Kratos’ shield, and this is your chance to press the right bumper and have Kratos attack the enemy with his Leviathan Axe, sending them flying and dealing out huge damage in the process.

Aiming and throwing Kratos’ Leviathan Axe is also a big part of the game, and can be used to pummel enemies and freeze them in place. Aim with the axe equipped and you’ll get an aiming reticle on the screen, which you’ll need to aim at an enemy and then press the right bumper to throw the axe at them. When hit with the Leviathan Axe, the enemy will freeze in place. You can now either summon back the axe to deal some damage to the enemy by pressing triangle, or you can go up to them and press right trigger to kick them away, dealing massive amounts of damage if you can manage to kick them into a wall.

Once you’ve defeated Dauoi Kaupmaor near the conclusion of the tutorial section of God of War, you’ll be able to command Atreus to shoot arrows at enemies by pressing square. If you want Atreus to shoot an arrow at a particular enemy, or to target the part of an especially large enemy, you can aim with the left trigger and then press square to have Atreus loose an arrow at that spot. It’s a useful diversionary tactic to draw enemies away from Kratos temporarily, but don’t worry, Atreus won’t actually be harmed by any attacks that are launched in his direction.
