God of War: How to Free the Dragon Fafnir

While exploring Midgard, you can rescue a huge dragon as part of the Flight of Fafnir Favor.

God of War has many dragons, one of which is the captured titan Fafnir, which players can rescue for rewards and experience. We'll show you how to free the dragon Fafnir and find your way to the three shrines holding it in place.

How to Free the Dragon Fafnir in God of War

To free Fafnir in God of War you’ll need to venture into a fairly hidden region in order to find the Dragon. Sail to the left of the Alfheim tower on the Lake of Nine, and Kratos and Atreus will be able to dock their boat at a shore. Atreus can now use his shock arrows to bring down the rubble straight ahead of you, letting the pair scale the cliff.

Once you’ve reached the top of the cliff, head along the path on the left, and where Kratos can open some giant wooden doors. You’re now in domain of Fafnir, where the Flight of Fafnir quest will kick off.

Fafnir Shrine Locations

Drop down to the ledges just to your left, and then follow the path around to the left, where you’ll find a Draugr praying at a shrine. You need to kill all the Draugr in the area, and then destroy the shrine itself with the Leviathan Axe, bringing you one step closer to freeing Fafnir.

Come out of the shadowy area that the shrine was in, and turn left, to see another shrine at the end of the pathway. You’ll have to defeat all the Draugr in front Kratos, as well as dodging the lightning strikes from Fafnir himself, until you can safely make it to the shrine and destroy it.

You’ll now need to head to the bottom right corner of the arena, away from Fafnir, where you’ll find a ledge that Kratos and Atreus can jump to. Once you’ve scaled this ledge, you’ll find yourself facing off against several weaker Draugr, as well as one powerful Draugr with a huge two handed sword.

Make sure to use Atreus’ shock arrows to tear the armor off the huge Draugr, and you can take him out without too much difficulty. Now hack away at the final shrine until it’s gone, and you can make your way back to a freed Fafnir.

Flight of Fafnir Rewards

Interact with the runic pedestal in front of the Dragon, and you’ll free Fafnir, bringing an end to the Flight of Fafnir quest. You’ll be rewarded with over 800 XP, and the elusive Dragon Tear item for completing the tricky undertaking.
