The Assassin's Creed Origins Phylakes mini bosses are hulking brutes, constantly wandering across entire regions of the open world map in the hunt for Bayek. A single Phylakes may be a lot to contend with, but in this Assassin's Creed Origins Phylakes guide, we'll be detailing exactly how to kill Phylakes you encounter in the game.

Should you alternatively need anything else on Assassin's Creed Origins, including the best ways to earn money quickly, as well as how to rapidly level up Bayek, make sure to check out our Assassin's Creed Origins guides walkthrough hub.

Assassin's Creed Origins Phylakes Guide

For starters, what are the Assassin's Creed Origins Phylakes? After a certain amount of time spent progressing through the main campaign of Assassin's Creed Origins, the Pharaoh Ptolemy (chief antagonist of Assassin's Creed Origins) will send the Phylakes out into the wild, in an attempt to hunt down and kill Bayek.

The Assassin's Creed Origins Phylakes are actually entirely optional, and you can avoid them if you wish, should you steer clear of them on the world map. Bear in mind though that if a brazier is lit in an enemy camp and reinforcements are summoned, there's a good chance that a Phylakes could accompany said reinforcements in hunting you down.

There are ten total Phylakes patrolling the world of Assassin's Creed Origins, all ranging from roughly level 20, to level 40. Should you take down one of them (which we'll get onto further down), you'll initiate the Phylakes' Prey quest, which tasks you with killing all ten Phylakes scattered around the world map. This is by no means an easy feat, because as we mentioned, there are a number of Phylakes at the top level of 40.

How to Kill a Phylakes

So, you know how to go about finding a Phylakes, but how do you actually kill one? For starters, you'll want to hold off and carefully assess the situation whenever you come into range of a Phylakes. Bear in mind that, unlike virtually every other enemy in Assassin's Creed Origins, the Phylakes can attack Bayek on sight, so they won't wait around for you to initiate combat.

If the Phylakes is patrolling on the ground without a mount, then we'd recommend taking a stealthy approach and stabbing them in the back, as although it won't outright kill them, it will make the ensuing fight a whole lot easier. If the Phylakes happens to be mounted on a horse or chariot, then you're going to have to hit them with an arrow, to get them to come to a halt and dismount.

Once combat has initiated with a Phylakes, you need to take into account the weapon and/or shield they possess. We've encountered Phylakes' with swords, spears, shields, maces, and bows, meaning you can never be certain how a Phylakes is going to attack you. If they have a bow, then you need to close the gap between you and press the attack immediately, with a strong combination of light and heavy attacks. Alternatively, if the Phylakes is armed with a melee weapon, then we'd advise you back off and wait for them to initiate the attack, as you'll need to watch and carefully study their attack patterns.

One tactic that works exceptionally well against Phylakes is the use of a smoke bomb, provided you've unlocked them in the abilities tree. After you've dodged a melee attack from a Phylakes, hit Y/Triangle to drop a smoke bomb, which will disorientate your enemy for a few seconds, letting you lay into them with a few melee attacks of your own before backing off again.

Ultimately, it's going to take a lot of levelling up before Bayek can take on the strongest Phylakes at the very top of the table. If you need any help with that, head on over to our Assassin's Creed Origins levelling guide, to help you along your way to the higher levels.
