Rage 2 is coming from developers id Software and Avalanche Studios, all set to release in 2019.

Rage 2 was one of the most surprising announcements of this year so far, as Bethesda fully resurrected the franchise at their E3 2018 presentation. In this Rage 2 everything we know guide, we'll be going over all the solid details that we know about the upcoming game so far, including the Rage 2 release date, as well as the Rage 2 E3 2018 gameplay footage, in which it revealed that the game would run fully at 60FPS.

Rage 2 Release Date

Rage 2 might seem like it's coming from nowhere, but it's actually following in the footsteps of Bethesda bringing back old (nearly dead) franchises and breathing new life into them. This happened with Prey (2) in 2017, a spiritual successor of sorts to the original Prey, that actually bore very little resemblance to the original game.

But Rage 2 does look to be sticking slightly more to the established formula from back in the original game, moreso than Prey. As of right now, the only information we have to go on for a potential Rage 2 release date is "2019" according to the official press release from publisher Bethesda.

Rage 2 E3 2018 Gameplay

The first time we saw proper gameplay footage for Rage 2 was at Bethesda's E3 2018 presentation on June 10. The demo for Rage 2 kicked off with Andrew WK of all people taking the stage. After the awkward camera cuts to the perplexed audience, Avalanche developers came out to talk the game up.

Protagonist Walker kicked off the gameplay footage, talking about how his parents were killed, and that he's the last ranger of the wasteland. We then got some pre-alpha footage of Rage 2, where Walker is out to find a rare artifact.

Our sister site Eurogamer recently saw Rage 2 behind closed doors while visiting Avalanche Studio in Sweden. Martin Robinson's impressions of it was that "the demo, while fun, was disappointingly narrow - a short, siphoned off story section that's relatively linear and doesn't show off any of Rage 2's open world".

There's definitely an emphasis on the potential for a grand double act between id Software and Avalanche, but we'll have to wait until next year to find out whether they've perfected their craft of the first person shooter.

Rage 2 60FPS, Single Player

Over on our sister site Eurogamer, Avalanche Software revealed that Rage 2 would not only be a strictly single player game, but also that it would hit 60FPS (frames per second) on certain consoles, as well as on PC.

As you might imagine, the consoles that will support steady 60FPS gameplay for Rage 2 will be the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X. The base versions of both these consoles unfortunately won't be able to reach the stable 60FPS setting, and we can only assume that these versions will be running at a reduced 30FPS.

Rage 2 Trailer

Speaking of the prospective release window for Rage 2, the Spring 2019 release window for the game, and the PC, PS4, and Xbox One platforms for the game were announced in the trailer just below:

Our big takeaway is that Rage 2 is an FPS game, and not a third person action game like we originally anticipated upon hearing that Avalanche Studios was one of the developers involved (more on that below). Otherwise, Bethesda has promised more details about Rage 2 at their E3 2018 presentation, which is taking place in the evening of June 10 in LA.

What we know for now is that vehicle combat is a big part of Rage 2, and this is something that Avalanche Studios have experience with in 2015's Mad Max. There's also a variety of weapons including rocket launchers, shotguns, rifles and more, and it also looks like there are special abilities tied to the left hand of Walker, the character which you play.

Aside from the main character of Walker, we know that an asteroid crash landed into Earth, wiping out roughly 80 per cent of the human population. The remaining humans have formed themselves into factions, and it's these crazy factions that you get a glimpse of throughout the reveal trailer just above, and we can safely assume it's these factions that Walker will be fighting throughout Rag 2.

This Rage 2 trailer came about after a teaser trailer was first leaked online early on May 14, before officially being unveiled by Bethesda later on the same day. This isn't the only leak that's pestered the unveiling of Rage 2, as Walmart Canada originally revealed a listing for the game in early May 2018, causing the official Rage Twitter account to poke a bit of fun at the retailer, while also crucially never denying that the listing was real and not a fake.

Along with the official reveal of Rage 2 on May 14, Bethesda revealed that the game was a collaboration between id Software and Avalanche Studios. While Avalanche Studios are famed for Just Cause and Mad Max, and look set to be handling the vehicular side of Rage 2, we don't yet know the role that id Software are playing in development, although if DOOM in 2016 was anything to go by, this collaboration sounds very promising indeed.

This is everything right now that we know for certain and can speculate about Rage 2, but keep an eye on this guide, as we'll be updating it in the future with all further details of the game that are unveiled by Bethesda.
