Just like in every other Pokemon game, Eevee is in Pokemon GO. And just as before, Eevee has multiple evolutions that can take place. The difference in Pokemon GO though, is that there are no elemental stones to speak of, so you can't simply whip one out to determine which pokemon you'll get. Instead, there's a naming method, a buddy method, and other ways to know which Eeveelutions you'll get. In this Pokemon GO Eevee Evolutions Guide, we've got all of the info on how to evolve Eevee in Pokemon GO. We'll cover each method, and also take a look at Shiny Eevee evolutions as well.

In other Pokemon games, you evolve Eevee using elemental stones. In Pokémon GO, Eevee's evolution method was a mystery for quite some time, until it was discovered that it's all down to naming. Interestingly, the method calls back to characters in the older episodes of the Pokémon anime series: The Battling Eevee Brothers and The Kimono Sisters. Simply put, the name you give your Eevee seems to directly affect its "Eeveelution."

How to Evolve Eevee in Pokemon Go

  • Capture an Eevee, if you haven't already.
  • Tap the pencil icon next to the word "Eevee" to change its name.
  • If you want a Flareon, name the Eevee Pyro
  • If you want a Jolteon, name the Eevee Sparky
  • If you want a Vaporeon, name the Eevee Rainer
  • If you want an Espeon, name the Eevee Sakura
  • If you want an Umbreon, name the Eevee Tamao
  • When you've finished re-naming your Eevee, quit the Pokemon GO app completely and re-start it to make sure the name registers to the game's servers.

When you re-open the Pokémon GO app, enter the Pokémon menu and hit "Evolve" to meet your new and improved Eevee. Don't forget, you need enough Eevee candy to make the evolution.

The Story Behind the Eevee Naming Method in Pokemon GO

The unique method of evolving Eevee in Pokemon GO isn't just some random idea cooked up by the folks at Niantic. No, instead it is actually a throwback to an iconic episode of the Pokemon anime TV series. It harkens back to an episode called "The Battling Eevee Brothers", in which Ash comes across three brothers each with a different Eeveelution. Please! This IS NOT CORRECT! My friends tried it (On their first and second attempts too), I tried it, and the names DO NOT MATTER! So many sites and people say it but it's false, and if it worked, remember there is a chance of 33% for getting the Evolution you want since there are only 3 options.
If you changed your Eevee name and it worked like it explained then it's A TOTAL COINCIDENCE! The "Name theory" proven to not work many times.
Also - The "Second Attack" theory of the Eevee, Like Swift will give you water or Dig will give you fire - Isn't true either! I had an Eevee with Swift that evolved into a Veporeon, and another user had Dig as a second attack and also evolved into a Veporeon.
So far I have no idea how the Eevee Evolution works - I think It's totaly random, don't count on everything people assume on the internet!
Thank you for reading and have a good day XD

@Kamehamama It is 100% true in my considerable experience. I've used this trick on 3 different accounts, from launch to just last week, and my wife has used it on her account as well. Saying it is a coincidence that has worked for all 5 evolution variations on 4 separate accounts might as well be saying I'm the luckiest person to ever have lived. That being said, what this article does not mention is that it only works the very first time you do it, for each name. After the first time that's it. You can name them whatever you want and there's no way to guarantee what they'll evolve into. Now there's a chance the names didn't register with the servers before they were evolved or people are claiming it doesn't because it didn't work for them after the first time using it. Whatever the reason that's human error and not a problem with this method. It works.
