God of War Weapons - How to Upgrade the Leviathan Axe, Light Runic Attack, Heavy Runic Attacks, Runic Summons, Atreus’ Talon Bow Guide

This God of War walkthrough and guide includes collectible locations, weapons, armor, secrets, Valkyries and more.

Guide by Hirun Cryer, Tom Orry, .

Weapons are a large part of the God of War, not only because Kratos is going to spend hours crushing his foes to dust, but also because he’s got the shiny new Leviathan Axe with which to do it. In this God of War weapons guide, we’ll be walking you through how to upgrade the Leviathan Axe, as well as all the special Runic attacks, Runic Summons, and Atreus’ Talon bow.

If you need a guide on anything else to do with God of War, including a full story primer for everything you might have missed if this is your first time playing the series, as well as a complete combat guide for all the combos you need to know, make sure to head over to our God of War walkthrough hub.

God of War Weapons Guide

As we mentioned at the top, Kratos has the fancy new Leviathan Axe, which is basically a frost-based weapon that he can throw by aiming with the left trigger, throwing with the right trigger, and recalling by pressing triangle. The Leviathan Axe deals monumental damage to some enemies like common Draugr, but some ice-based enemies like frost Draugr can be entirely resistant to the attacks of the axe.

Kratos has the Leviathan Axe, and Atreus supports him in combat with the Talon bow. This special bow, handmade for Atreus by his late mother, can be upgraded by heading to either Brok or Sindri’s shop, just like Kratos’ Leviathan Axe can, which we’ll get on to further down this guide.

Kratos’ Leviathan Axe has two sub categories: light Runic attack, and heavy Runic attack. You’ll come across Runic attack items while scavenging through the wilds of God of War, and you can then equip these to Kratos’ axe in order to give him brand new abilities.

God of War Runic Summons

Atreus also has a special Runic Summons ability, which lets him summon ghostly allies onto the battlefield to aid you. We’ll break down all the Runic abilities for you just below:

  • Light Runic attack - Bound to the left and right bumpers on the Dualshock 4, these attacks typically deal out smaller amounts of damage, but have shorter cooldown times.
  • Heavy Runic attack - Executed by holding the left bumper and right trigger, these heavy attacks generally deal damage over an area.
  • Runic Summons - Hold down square to unleash Atreus’ equipped Runic Summons attack, which can summon anything from a hoard of pigs, to a swarm of falcons.

God of War Weapon Upgrades Guide

To upgrade either the Leviathan Axe for Kratos or the Talon bow for Atreus, you’re going to need Hacksilver, and any other unique currency needed for upgrading certain weapons. For example the Leviathan Axe can only be upgraded using the Frozen Flame item, which are scarcely found throughout God of War, and are basically rewards for some of the harder bosses in the game.

Upgrading the Leviathan Axe will increase Kratos’ overall damage output with the weapon, but for Atreus’ Talon bow, it works in a different way. You’ve got two options when it comes to Atreus: upgrading the Talon bow itself, or upgrading the Talon Quiver. Choosing to upgrade the Talon bow itself, with Hacksilver and Svartalheim Steel, will increase the overall damage of the weapon, whereas spending large amounts of Hacksilver to upgrade the Talon Quiver increases Atreus’ maximum arrow capacity.

You’re definitely going to want to upgrade the Leviathan Axe, Talon bow, and Talon Quiver as soon as you’ve got the resources necessary in God of War. No matter if you’re playing on the easiest or the hardest difficulty, you’re going to want to be able to deal significant amounts of damage to each enemy, from the weakest Draugr to the strongest boss characters.

This marks the conclusion of our complete God of War weapons guide, but make sure to continue ahead to our Mulpelheim Cipher Pieces guide, or our Niflheim Cipher Pieces guide, if you want to access two brand new realms in the game.

When fighting Matturg Helson aka Bridge Keeper
The last part where is says
(The final thing you need to be wary of when taking on the Bridge Keeper is the minions that he can summon onto the battlefield, all of which you’ve previously fought on your journey through Helheim so far. We’d recommend taking these minions out as soon as possible, as they can be a nuisance if you instead turn your back on them and focus purely on the Bridge Keeper instead.)

Does not work on (Give Me God Of War) he well continue to summon as soon as you kill the minions maybe on a lower difficulty you can kill the them fast enough but not on Give me god of war. When he summon them ignore them and run to him and light attack him to get him to start teleporting his attack well hit the minions and kill them in one or two hits and when his last attack aim and press R2 to do heavy attack two or three time then doge back but keep a eye on themEdited April 2018 by Daraix

Surprise, surprise, the valkyries are mostly in Chambers of Odin! Maybe you could actually SHOW us where they are instead of saying vague areas as though that'll help any?
