What are the Metal Cubes in Super Mario Odyssey?

Metal Cubes in Super Mario Odyssey initially appear to be rather pointless. You will see them but be unable to do anything with them. While you’re playing through the main story in Super Mario Odyssey you can just ignore them as there’s no way to interact with them or do anything with them at all. Once you finish Super Mario Odyssey the Metal Cubes unlock some really cool extra content.

How to Activate Moon Rocks/Metal Cubes in Super Mario Odyssey

To Activate a Metal Cube in Super Mario Odyssey you must have carried out a number of tasks, as detailed in the list below.

  • Complete Super Mario Odyssey and Unlock the end game content - essentially, beat Bowser and the final Bowser sequence.
  • Beat all sub-bosses and bosses in a kingdom.
  • Visit a Kingdom and Cappy will inform you that the Metal Cube is ready to be activated.
  • Throw Cappy into the Metal Cube.

What do Moon Rocks/Metal Cubes Unlock in Super Mario Odyssey?

When you throw Cappy into a metal cube in Super Mario Odyssey (after completing the tasks detailed above) you’ll unlock a number of new Power Moon to find in the kingdom you’re on. Each kingdom’s metal cube will unlock a different number of extra moons, but all together you’ll get a lot of new power moons to unlock across all the kingdoms. All the newly revealed power moons will be marked on your map, but actually getting to them is the challenging part.

Mario Odyssey Moon Rock/Metal Cube Locations

While Mario Odyssey hides a lot of things, it doesn’t hide the metal cubes (or moon rocks). The metal cubes/moon rocks are extremely easy to find as Cappy will tell you exactly where they are when you return to a kingdom after finishing the game (and beaten all bosses and sub bosses in the kingdom). You’ll see the metal cube’s location on the game map and a glowing light will be shooting upwards from its location in the game world.
