Grand Theft Auto 6 is absolutely going to happen, but with Red Dead Redemption 2 currently being prepped for release it might be some time before we get any firm details on the game. In this GTA 6 everything we know guide, we'll be providing plenty of speculation as to a possible GTA 6 release date, as well as additional rumors that appeared from a GTA 6 leak.
GTA 6 Release Date
According to a report from The Know, GTA 6 could be three or four years away from releasing, with Rockstar internally referring to the game as ‘Project Americas’.
Since this is all from a single source report, take it all with a heavy pinch of salt, as we’ve been unable to verify or confirm any of the details that were first reported by The Know. As more GTA 6 info hits the internet we'll update the article and point out any details that seem legitimate.
The new report from The Know claims that the internal release date target for GTA 6 at Rockstar is 2021/22. That is a long way off. A release date for GTA 6 that's so far in the future would also suggest that a lot could change before release (if any of the following info is accurate to begin with).
However keep in mind that Rockstar has historically struggled to hit its initial release targets for games, the most recent of which being Red Dead Redemption 2, which was delayed twice from its initial release window of Fall 2017, to Fall 2018.
As we mentioned previously, take all this with a pinch of salt, but if the report from The Know is accurate, then it means Rockstar is currently targeting a release year of 2021. Whether it sticks to this initial release period remains to be seen.
It's worth noting that 2021 or 2022 will be after new consoles from Sony and Microsoft are expected to be released. One of the reason's GTA 5 achieved such incredible sales figures is due to how it initially released on Xbox 360 and PS3 near the end of their life cycles (a time with a huge install base), then got ported to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If GTA 6 is to achieve the same level of success, the suggested release date might be too late. With new consoles expected in 2019 or 2020, launching GTA 6 before that makes sense, enabling the firm to later release enhanced versions of GTA 6 on the PS5/Xbox Two. GTA 5 released two months before the PS4 and Xbox One arrived on the market, so Rockstar isn't afraid to launch new games right at the end of a console lifecycle.
Will GTA 6 Feature Vice City?
The release window isn't the only detail surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 that The Know reported on. According to their source, GTA 6 is going to be taking place in Vice City, aka. Rockstar’s version of South Florida that’s appeared previously in the franchise. This sounds a lot like what a false rumor would say about GTA 6, given that GTA Vice City is one of the most loved entries in the franchise. The rumor doesn't state what era the game will be set, however, so don't get too excited about another brilliant 80s soundtrack just yet.
We mentioned previously that GTA 6 is being referred to internally as ‘Project Americas’, and this is because Grand Theft Auto 6 is also slated to be taking place in parts of South America. While we don’t know exactly what parts of South America, these locations in GTA 6 could form some sort of excursion missions, just like North Yankton did back in Grand Theft Auto 5.
GTA 6 Playable Characters
GTA 5 was the first in the series to feature more than one playable protagonist, and the final game actually ended up alternating between Michael, Franklin, and the deranged Trevor, with each having a part to play throughout the single-player story of the game.
While the report from The Know doesn’t state whether there’ll be more than one playable protagonist for the single-player portion of GTA 6, it does claim that for the first time in the series there’ll be a lead female character. This is all we have to go on right now, but it’s certainly a step in a different direction for Rockstar’s long-running series that has traditionally focused on tales of alpha male dominance in modern society.
One area of GTA 6 totally missing from the info leak is GTA 6 Online. It's practically guaranteed that GTA Online will be a major part of GTA 6, given that GTA Online has made Rockstar a lot of money, but the form it will take remains a complete mystery. GTA Online was released a month after GTA 5 arrived on PS3 and Xbox 360, and Rockstar could follow the same approach with GTA Online for GTA 6.
We only know of one game for certain as of right now that's in development over at Rockstar, and that's Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar are all hands on deck now for the release of the cowboy sequel towards the end of this year, and for everything else you need to know about the upcoming game from Rockstar, head over to our Red Dead Redemption 2 everything we know guide.
This is all we have to go on right now for Grand Theft Auto 6, with all rumored speculation coming from a single report. We’ll keep this guide up to date with any additional rumors that make the rounds, but don’t expect to hear anything official from Rockstar any time soon, especially with Red Dead Redemption 2 on the horizon.
