The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Launching as the premier game on the Nintendo Switch from the jump, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had the weight of the world on its shoulders to single handedly sell a console, and it somehow pulled it off. Putting the player in a stunningly-crafted, vibrant open world, Breath of the Wild gave true meaning to the phrase “open world” - we’ve been attempting to climb basically every surface in another open world game ever since.
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey is somehow both a wonderful introduction to Mario games for newcomers and a reference-packed nostalgia whirlwind for long-time fans. There is a debate to be had over whether or not Odyssey betters the Galaxy games, but what’s on offer here is easily good enough to propel yet another Switch game onto the game of the year list and it is quite obviously one of the best Switch games of 2017, too.
Sonic Mania is a good game, which makes it a really excellent Sonic game. If you’re a card-carrying member of the Sonic Fan Club, just think for a moment before you head to the comments. There are actually very few great Sonic games. While Sonic Mania falls into a familiar trap of being so fast it’s hard to appreciate the level design, it’s still the best Sonic game we’ve had since the SEGA Genesis. As a modern take on a retro classic, SEGA has finally done the Blue Blur’s legacy proud. Just forget about all those games that came in between, yeah?
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Bringing a wide open world and a complex combat system to the Nintendo Switch, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 propelled the entire franchise forward with new characters to meet and new worlds to explore and conquer. There are deep, rewarding combat mechanics that also tie into the unique and interesting characters spread throughout the course of this hundred hour RPG. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is rich and rewarding, but there’s a heavy amount of deep RPG mechanics to get through.
Steamworld Dig 2
Steamworld Dig 2 slaps a pickaxe in the hand of Dorothy the steambot as she sets out to find out what happened to her friend, Rusty, following the events of the first Steamworld Dig. All the answers she seeks lie below her feet, and they're not easily unearthed. Steamworld Dig 2 offers a delightful toolbox of equipment and weapons, and every piece is well-suited for chugging through dirt, rock, and / or punching monsters and crazed cultists. The game's cycle of digging, finding loot, and returning back to sell your treasures is immensely satisfying. The whole experience shines like a polished brass gear.
Battle Chef Brigade
Battle Chef Brigade brings together ideas and mechanics that don't seem like they should work together. One part platformer, one part puzzle game, one part cooking title. Add in a heavy dose on anime-style art and storytelling. Everything comes together to create one of the most charming and unique titles on the Nintendo Switch, a delicious dish that will make you feel like you're fighting it out on Iron Chef or Chopped.
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Tetris is great! The basics of Tetris are so good that it’s pretty hard to mess up. Puyo Puyo is great! The basics of Puyo Puyo are so good that’s it’s pretty hard to mess up. So it should be no surprise that Puyo Puyo Tetris is excellent, and one of the best Switch games of 2017. Combining the mechanics of two classic puzzle games works beautifully and it’s great to have a game like this to play while on the move.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Mario, a much loved character who has starred in so many great video games we’ve all lost count. Rabbids, much loved video game characters who have starred in maybe one half decent video game. Who would have thought this crossover would work as well as it does. By mixing a turn-based Xcom-style gameplay system with a smart script and lovely visuals, Mario + Rabbids is one of the nicest surprises of the year and one of the best Switch games of 2017.
Bringing the colorful and vibrant art style of the original to the Nintendo Switch, Splatoon 2 features some fast paced online ink battles, along with a horde mode that’s a challenging and rewarding side activity. Splatoon 2 fully embraces its wild and fun aesthetic, and the result is a shooter that stands out proudly from the rest of the bunch in 2017.
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
All three of Shovel Knight's adventures are collected in this marvelous little bundle, which is perfect on the Nintendo Switch's big screen. It includes the surprisingly emotional original; the hilarious (and touching) Plague of Shadows, and the dark Specter of Torment, all of which bring their own unique twist to Shovel Knight's excellent platforming formula. No matter which version you play, you will find a brilliant platform with superb artwork, a memorable soundtrack, and tons of wonderful little easter eggs. It's a must-own on the Nintendo Switch.
