Destiny 2 Crucible Guide

The core mode of Destiny 2's Crucbible features four players taking on another team of four players, bringing in their own weapons and armor, but having all level advantages disabled over one another. This creates an even playing field, although you'll find our some weapons and armor are obviously favored over others in the Crucible by the player base.

How to Unlock Crucible in Destiny 2

When you start playing Destiny 2, Crucible isn't available. To unlock the PvP mode in Destiny 2 you'll first have to make your way through the intro story missions. Once you've completed the Spark mission you'll be returned to the Farm and the Crucible will be accesible. Speak to Lord Shaxx, the Crucible Handler - he'll have a crown marker over him. Once you've spoken to him you'll be able to access Crucible game modes from the Director menu.

Destiny 2 Crucible Tokens

After every Crucible match, whether you win or lose, you'll be rewarded with a single Crucible Token. You can then take these Tokens to Lord Shaxx in the Farm, and after you've given him enough Crucible Tokens to level him up, he'll reward you with a Legendary piece of gear.

This Legendary piece of gear will always be five levels higher than your current Power level, up to a maximum of level 265. We'd estimate it takes roughly 18-20 Crucible Tokens to obtain one Legendary item from Lord Shaxx, so if PvP content is your thing, you're in for a treat in the long run.

Destiny 2 Crucible Game Modes Guide and Tips

Here you’ll find descriptions for each of Destiny 2 Crucible’s match types, plus a few tips so you can get started without making a fool of yourself. We’ll also reveal info on Power Ammo respawns for each game type.

Destiny 2 Crucible Clash Mode - Beginner’s Guide and Power Ammo Info

Clash is a fairly straightforward team deathmatch mode. The first team to score 75 kills wins the match. If the 8-minute timer runs out, the team with the most kills at that point wins the match.

Power Ammo spawns into the map while playing Clash in three locations. One on either side of the map, and one in a neutral location.

  • Neutral Location Power Ammo - Appears approximately 20 seconds into a game. Does not respawn once collected.
  • Non-neutral Power Ammo - These two appear approximately 90 seconds into a game and will respawn 90 seconds after use.

Destiny 2 Clash Tips

  • Getting control of Power Ammo is important, but be careful not to get lured into a trap. If a Power Ammo spawn hasn’t been taken for some time, it might be an ambush.
  • Kills are the most important thing to your team’s success, so repeatedly dying is about the worst thing you can do. If you simply can’t compete and are running to your death over and over, hang back. You might not rack up the kills, but at least you won’t be handing points to the opposition.

Destiny 2 Crucible Supremacy Mode - Beginner’s Guide and Power Ammo Info

The Supremacy game mode in Destiny 2 Crucible is a take on team deathmatch, but with points earned for collecting crests dropped by fallen enemies.

You earn a single point for your team for collecting a crest dropped by a killed enemy. You can pick up crests dropped by team mates, but you won’t earn any points - the act simply stops the other team from scoring.

Power Ammo spawns into the map while playing Supremacy in three locations.

Destiny 2 Supremacy Tips

  • Supremacy is essentially Clash but with a twist. If you make a kill an enemy team mate is close by, try to take them out too. You’ll prevent yourself being killed while trying to get the crest and get two crests to pick up if you’re successful.

Destiny 2 Crucible Survival Mode - Beginner’s Guide and Power Ammo Info

Survival sees two teams trying to wipe each other out. A team has a bank of eight lives, so a killed player will respawn if a life is in the bank. You can win the round by defeating all enemy players so they no longer respawn or by ending the three-minute round with more lives than the opposition.

If lives are even when the round ends, a tiebreaker period of one minute begins. In this period a capture point appears, so you can win by killing all opponents or be capturing the control point.

  • A single Power Ammo spawn point exists in the centre of a map and will respawn 75 seconds after it is used.

Destiny 2 Survival Tips

  • With only one Power Ammo spawn point it pays to get it before your opponents.
  • A mid-range weapon is ideal as it allows for most combat scenarios.

Destiny 2 Crucible Control Mode - Beginner’s Guide and Power Ammo Info

Destiny 2's Control mode returns from the original game, and you can find some helpful pointers on understanding the mode just below.

Control features two teams, each trying to capture and hold up to 3 zones around a map. Points are handed out for taking control of a zone or for killing an enemy, but kill points can be boosted by zones controlled.

  • 1 Point for claiming a zone’s control point
  • 1 Point for killing an enemy
  • 2 Points for killing an enemy while your team controls the majority of zones
  • 3 Points for killing an enemy while your team controls all zones

The winner is the team to reach 100 points first or the team with the most points when the match timer reaches eight minutes.

  • Power Ammo spawns on either side of the map and respawns 90 seconds after use.

Destiny 2 Control Tips

  • Don’t send more than one player in to capture a zone. Capturing takes the same time no matter if you’ve got one or four players in the zone. As the capture point is a target for enemy fire, only send in one player and have everyone else provide covering fire.
  • Control has a clever scoring system, so there’s no always much point in risking trying to take control of another zone. If you already control the majority of zones you’ll earn two points per kill, while your opponents will only earn one point per kill. Picking off foes while maintaining control has a better risk/return ratio.
  • Don’t wander around alone. If you try and do anything on your own you’ll likely fall foul to a group attack from the opposition.

Destiny 2 Crucible Countdown Mode - Beginner’s Guide and Power Ammo Info

The Countdown Crucible mode is entirely new to Destiny 2, and has a far quicker pace than the alternate Control mode. A team is either tasked with setting the charge or stopping the other team from setting and detonating the charge. Each small round is two minutes in length.

The attacking team can win a round by setting off the charge or killing all opposition team members. The defending team can win a round by preventing the other team from setting a charge within the time limit or by defusing a set charge before it detonates.

It takes approximately three seconds to set a charge and approximately five seconds to defuse a charge. The charge will detonate after approximately 40 seconds.

  • Power Ammo spawns approximately 30 seconds into a round, with one drop on either side of the map. These will respawn 30 seconds after use.

Destiny 2 Countdown Tips

  • You are out of the game if you are killed, but can be revived by a team mate. Every player has a single revive token that can be used while they are alive.
  • Of all the game modes in Crucible, Countdown requires the most teamwork. Everyone needs to work towards one goal or target.
  • Make sure someone on the team can provide long-range support with a rifle.
