Where is Cyberpunk 2077 Set?
Thanks to some new info released by CD Projekt Red, we now know where Cyberpunk 2077 will take place. It’s in a fictional city in California called Night City. It’s a bustling urban environment with an emphasis on vertical exploration. The main character, V, lives in a high rise apartment many floors above ground. It looks to be a great mix of bright, futuristic color palettes, and Blade Runner-esque squalor.
Cyberpunk 2077 Night City Districts
Cyberpunk’s Night City is divided up into six distinct districts. We’ve got info on each one and have compiled it in the following list:
- City Center - The largest area in Night City, comprised of luxury apartments and huge neon corporation buildings.
- Watson - This district is home to a unique mix of Asian cultures. There are various bazaars and markets, all housed within narrow alleyways and cramped streets.
- Westbrook - A party hub for the rich elite class of Night City.
- Heywood - A predominantly Latino neighbourhood where the protagonist, V, lives. It’s a huge suburban housing district plagued by rampant gang violence.
- Pacifica - Most dangerous part of town, overrun by gangs, criminals and a seedy underworld.
- Santa Domingo - An industrial hub responsible for powering the whole city. Factories, towers and generators are present in their thousands.
Is Cyberpunk 2077 set in California?
While Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City, California, the devs have been clear to point out that the setting is purely fictional, and is an amalgamation of several different cities and cultures. Judging by the trailer, there’s definitely elements of Tokyo, L.A. and New York in Night City, so it seems that it will be incredibly diverse with many separate areas and styles to explore.
Cyberpunk 2077 Map Size
In an interview that Eurogamer did with Quest Designer on the game, Patrick Mills, the question of how big the Cyberpunk 2077 map will be came up. Mills responded with the following:
"In terms of specific size, it's really difficult to tell because Witcher 3 was flat, and our game is very vertical. You've got a footprint in Witcher 3 and that's it. But our game just goes up and up and up and up. So we can put a lot of stuff in there. It's going to be really dense."We've got six districts. You just saw a little bit of Watson, which is a fallen corporate giant. Each district will feel distinct. There will be a lot to see and a lot to do. It's very big. It's very big."We can't put a number on it yet. We're still building it. It's difficult to say exactly how big it's going to be and we don't want to put any numbers on it. But it's going to be huge."
It seems that the team are still working on just how big the Cyberpunk 2077 map will be, and given its verticality, it will be difficult to compare to other games like The Witcher 3. From what we saw in the trailer, the world looked huge, and more importantly, diverse, so things are definitely looking good so far.
