Crafting is an essential part of Monster Hunter World, when you consider how many gadgets and other items every hunter has at their disposal for taking down the powerful creatures throughout the game. In this Monster Hunter World crafting guide, we’ll be going over how to craft items, as well as how you can maximize your haul of plants, mushrooms, and other ingredients.
If you instead need anything else to do with Monster Hunter World, including how to capture an animal safely for rare monster parts, as well as how to quickly track down any monster in the game by using the Scout Flies, head over to our Monster Hunter World guides walkthrough hub.
Monster Hunter World Crafting Guide
The best Monster Hunter World players will scavenge everything they can when they’re out and exploring the open maps of the Ancient Forest, Wildspire Waste, and more, so that they can then craft powerful items and gadgets. While our armor guide and weapon guide will walk you through how to craft weapons and armor items from the Smithy in the Workshop for battle, we’ll be covering how to craft useable items in this crafting guide.
When you’re exploring maps like the Coral Highlands or the Rotten Vale, your Scout Flies will periodically detect plants and other items that are nearby. Collectible items that you can scavenge while you’re exploring are divided into a few categories: plants, fungi, and bugs. It’s then up to you to follow the trail that your Scout Flies have left to the nearest collectible that they’ve detected, but you can also pull up your map by pressing the middle button on the Dualshock 4, or the ‘Options’ on the Xbox One controller, and scan your nearby surroundings with the cursor for any plants, fungi, or bugs.
Using this method, you can pinpoint exactly which plants, fungi, or bugs you want to collect, and then go around the map scavenging them. Keep in mind that you’ve only got a limited inventory of 24 items that you can carry at once, so if you want to keep on harvesting items from the map, you’ll have to return to the nearest Camp and stash your goods away in the Item Box. You won’t be the only one collecting items however, as your Palico will always be helping you harvest plants, bugs, and fungi wherever you go in Monster Hunter World. No matter if it’s a quest or a simple expedition, your Palico will always be on the lookout for items to collect.
How to Craft Items in Monster Hunter World
To actually craft items using all the plants and other collectibles that you’ve harvested in Monster Hunter World, you’ll want to bring up the pause menu, no matter if you’re out in the open world, or back home in Astera. From here, select the ‘Crafting List’ option, and you’ll be taken to a menu with all the crafting options in the entire game, no matter if you’ve got the items for them or not. This is actually a useful tool, as it means that if you can’t craft an Antidote, you’ll know that you have to scavenge some Antidote Herbs wherever you are.
There are three categories of items that you can craft in Monster Hunter World: healing/support, traps/offense, and ammo/coatings. The healing category is where you’ll find items that are mainly aimed at either healing your character with Mega Potions, or increasing your maximum health levels with items like Nutrients. The traps category is where you can not only craft special slinger ammo to fire at monsters with the left trigger, but also items like Shock Traps and Tranq Bombs, both of which can be used in conjunction to capture monsters alive. Finally, the ammo/coatings category is where you can craft specialized ammo for your Bowgun weapons, such as Paralysis Coating to disable a monster’s movement, or Sleep Coating to send them to sleep.
Best Items to Craft in Monster Hunter World
Just below, we’ve got a list of key items that you should always prioritize crafting materials for:
- Potion - Herb
- Mega Potion - Potion + Honey
- Antidote - Antidote Herb
- Shock Trap - Trap Tool + Thunderbug
- Tranq Bomb - Sleep Herb + Parashroom
- Poison Knife - Throwing Knife + Toadstool
You’ll always want to keep a stock of at least a few Herbs in your inventory, as you’ll want to be able to craft Potions, and Mega Potions whenever you need a health boost. Antidotes are key for preventing poisoning from powerful monsters like the Rathalos, and the Shock Trap and Tranq Bomb are key if you want to capture a monster alive. Finally, the Poison Knife can be a potentially deadly item, whittling down the health of powerful monsters.
