We know a Call of Duty is coming this year, but we don't know what it is, or when it'll be eventually revealed by publisher Activision. A new store listing seems to point to an internal alpha for an upcoming Call of Duty title.
Earlier today, a listing for a product called The Red Door appeared on the Microsoft Store (as first noted and reported by Eurogamer). The Red Door is a shooter developed by Call of Duty publisher Activision, weighing in at a pretty meaty download of 81GB.
"There is more than one truth," the product description for The Red Door reads. "If you go looking for answers, be ready to question everything and accept that nothing will ever be the same. The Red Door awaits, do you dare step through it?" Well that's one pretty cryptic description.
Weirdly enough, this actually isn't the first time The Red Door has made an appearance on a storefront. Earlier this year in June, The Red Door popped up on the PlayStation Store database, with a code before the title reading "CUSA20046." Dataminers dug into the files associated with the title, and allegedly came up with the title image just below for Call of Duty Black Ops.
There's always rampant speculation on the Call of Duty subreddit and across social media like YouTube and Twitter about 2020's Call of Duty. This is mainly because publisher Activision has never revealed a new game in the franchise so late in the year, when it's meant to be releasing later in the same year.
This is no doubt in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has widely affected the entire games industry, with signature events like E3 2020 being canceled, and games like Cyberpunk 2077 being delayed as a result of developers being forced to work from home. It's very easy to imagine the pandemic having seriously shaken up development plans for 2020's Call of Duty.
Right now, we're merely playing a waiting game to see what happens with this year's Call of Duty release from Activision. There have already been reports about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War being the official name of the next game in the series, but there's never been any comment on the reports from Activision.
