A Teaser for Pokemon Sword and Shield's Upcoming Expansions Goes Live Today

A Teaser for Pokemon Sword and Shield's Upcoming Expansions Goes Live Today

You can catch a Galarian Slowpoke once the update is live.

Two new expansions were announced for Pokemon Sword and Shield this morning, as part of Game Freak's post-launch rollout for the Nintendo Switch title. The first, the Isle of Armor, is due out in June 2020, but you won't have to wait until then to get a glimpse of what's coming; a software update for Sword and Shield today will add in a teaser for the upcoming expansion, including a new Pokemon to catch.

Going live sometime today, the update adds the two new would-be Gym Leaders from the Isle of Armor as special cameos, depending on your version of the game. Pokemon Sword players will get to meet Klara, a Poison-type trainer, while Shield gets Avery, a Psychic-type trainer with a big ol' top hat. These two will also be the respective new trainers for each version on the Isle of Armor, so you can get used to your new friend-rivals today.

Also appearing is a Galarian Slowpoke, a new regional variant that will have special evolutions for each expansion pass entry. You can catch the Slowpoke today, and then later on evolve it in the expansion pass content: into a Galarian Slowbro on the Isle of Armor, or a Galarian Slowking in Crown Tundra, the second expansion pass entry.

This update should be available for all users, and might help to entice you into booting Pokemon Sword and Shield back up before the first of the two expansions arrives in June. The Isle of Armor will be up first, so you won't have to wait long to see your aspiring Gym Leader pals again, or to evolve your Slowpoke. Crown Tundra arrives later on in Fall 2020, and looks to add some big, endgame raid-style dives into dens of legendary Pokemon.
