There's a total of 11 armor sets in Ghost of Tsushima, each one of which offers unique perks and abilities to enhance or change your play style. We've laid them all out below, as well as what you need to do to get them all, and which sets are best.

Best Armor Set

We'd struggle to say there's an empirical "best armor" in Ghost of Tsushima, as each set has certain strengths that apply to different circumstances. However, our experience with the game hammered home which armor sets were best for specific playstyles, and we've listed them below. Read on past that to see all the different armor sets in the game and how you can get them.

  • All-purpose: Ghost Armor/Kensei Armor
  • Melee Combat: Sakai Clan Armor/Gosaku's Armor/Kensei Armor
  • Stealth: Mongol Commander's Armor/Ghost Armor
  • Archery: Tadayori's Armor

Broken Armor

The worst armor/outfit in the game. It offers no benefits or abilities.

How to get: This is the starting armor you'll have in your inventory after the prologue.

Armor Abilities:

  • None

Traveller's Attire

A basic set of clothes that's best for exploration and collectible hunting, though offers no perks in battle or stealth.

How to get: Obtained after completing the early tutorial with Yuna and accessing the open world section of the game.

Armor Abilities:

  • Track Artifacts with the Guiding Wind.
  • Travelling clears 10% more fog of war on the map.
  • Controller will vibrate within 30 meters of an artifact.

Ronin Attire

A set of robes that's good for stealth and swordplay, though offers no defensive options.

How to get: Complete Ryuzo's first Tale, "Blood on the Grass."

Armor Abilities:

  • Reduces enemy detection speed by 10%.
  • 15% increase to Melee damage.
  • After leaving pampas grass while crouched, enemies will be much slower to detect you.

Samurai Clan Armor

A basic set of armor designed to enhance endurance and health, allowing you to tank through multiple hits.

How to get: Complete Masako's first Tale, appropriately named "The Tale of Lady Masako."

Armor Abilities:

  • Reduces all damage by a moderate amount.
  • Moderate increase to health.
  • Taking damage grants 15% resolve.

Tadayori's Armor

A lightweight set of armor perfect for archers, allowing you to fire your bow more accurately and quickly than ever.

How to get: This armor is a reward for completing the Mythic Tale: "The Legend of Tadayori", which we've outlined here.

Armor Abilities:

  • Increases nocking and reload speed by 15%.
  • Increases total Concentration time by 1 second.
  • Headshots restore 25% of the Concentration meter.

Sakai Clan Armor

A good all-rounder set of armor for combat, boosting both health, damage and giving you a serious edge in Standoff streaks.

How to get: After accessing Toyotama for the first time, there'll be a plot Tale available called "Ghosts from the Past." The Sakai Clan Armor is the reward for completing it.

Armor Abilities:

  • Moderate increase to Melee damage.
  • Moderate increase to health.
  • Increase the Standoff Streak by 1. Winning a Standoff has a 10% chance to Terrify nearby enemies.

Gosaku's Armor

A bulky set of armor designed for heavy attacks and stagger, excellent for long fights against large amounts of weak enemies.

How to get: This armor is a reward for completing the Mythic Tale: "The Unbreakable Gosaku", which we've outlined here.

Armor Abilities:

  • Moderate increase to health.
  • Moderate increase to Stagger Damage.
  • Killing a Staggered enemy restores 10% of health.

Kensei Armor

A sneaky set of armor designed to make the most out of your Ghost Weapons, especially when setting up ambushes. Can be enormously effective if you're well-stocked on equipment to get the most out of its last ability.

How to get: This armor is a reward for completing the Mythic Tale: "The Six Blades of Kojiro", which we've outlined here.

Armor Abilities:

  • 15% increase to Resolve gains.
  • Ghost Weapons deal 15% more damage.
  • Striking an enemy with a Ghost Weapon causes that enemy to deal 25% less damage and receive 25% more damage.

Ghost Armor

Though this armor is best for stealth, its abilities can also be used to end a fight quickly. Terrifying a nearby enemy is the same as killing them - they'll flee the fight and not come back.

How to get: A reward given for completing the last mission of Act 2, "From the Darkness."

Armor Abilities:

  • Reduces enemy detection speed by 20%.
  • Reduces the number of kills needed to enter the ghost stance by 1.
  • Kills have a 15% chance to Terrify a nearby enemy.

Mongol Commander's Armor

A powerful defensive option that also allows you to sneak through enemy lines. However, it cannot be upgraded from its starting form.

How to get: After getting to Kamiagata in Act 3, a mission will appear at Jogaku Temple called "Fit for the Khan". Completing it will get you the armor.

Armor Abilities:

  • Major increase to health.
  • Reduces all damage by a Major amount.
  • Disguises you while out of combat, massively reducing Mongol detection speed.

Fundoshi

A rather… minimalist approach to armor, this loincloth actually does a lot to assist stealth. It also cannot be upgraded, presumably because there's not much you can do to improve a belt with a washcloth hanging off it.

How to get: Find every hot spring in the game, which we've laid out how to do here.

Armor Abilities:

  • Running and sprinting no longer create noise.
