Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Already Setting Sales Records

In the UK and Japan, New Horizons is outselling everything else.

A lot of people started playing the newest Animal Crossing over the weekend. And in several regions, it's setting sales records for both the series and the Switch.

Shared over at GamesIndustryBiz, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold more copies in its first week than all previous Animal Crossing games combined. It's over three times larger of a launch than Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and is the single biggest game launch on Nintendo Switch-unless you combine Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield's numbers together.

It's important to note that this doesn't include digital numbers either. Considering how many people are likely practicing social distancing at moment, digital was likely a popular option for those who didn't already pre-order.

In Japan, Geo Corporation data via 4Gamer (thanks, VGC) indicates that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the largest Switch launch to date for the region. In its first three days, New Horizons reportedly sold more than previous record holder Pokemon Sword and Shield.

In our own review, Senior Editor Caty McCarthy says that while New Leaf remains the series' pinnacle, "with real-world headlines more harrowing than ever, there's never been a better time to go on vacation within Animal Crossing: New Horizons."

It seems that while current events coalesced to create a situation where everyone would want some kind of getaway like Animal Crossing, it's also just a solid addition to the Nintendo Switch library. As U.S. sales data, including hopefully digital data, gets released, it could be possible that the Switch has a new top-seller in Animal Crossing.
