The design tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are pretty extensive. Doing it all by hand, though, can be time-consuming, tedious, and pretty tough for those less artistically inclined. Luckily, some players have found a workaround.
Using the site AC Patterns and the Nintendo Switch Online app, players have been taking real-life images and transplanting them into their Animal Crossing worlds as designs. The editor can import images or let you draw your own, and there are actually a fair number of tools to let you fiddle with whatever you make.
How do I know so much? Well, because I've already done it a few times.
The top two "albums" are hand-drawn, and the bottom two are imported using AC Patterns. While I'm pretty happy with both outcomes, there's no doubt that I'm more keen on letting the machine do my work for me on something as complex as the Rush cover.
Others have put the tools to use as a way to import memes. Here's an alarming number of designs featuring Adam Sandler, from his appearance in the movie Uncut Gems.
Twitter user Fobwashed made QR codes for a few emotes and the Giant Bomb logo. But these are all just time-savers-what sort of massive, multi-panel, interlaced art installation could you make with the ease of importing a series of images? These Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have an answer.
So I've been converting my drawings into Animal Crossing QR codes- TheTerence (@TheTerence94) March 23, 2020

I assume these are imported because otherwise, someone just spent a frankly inordinate amount of time mapping out Jeff Goldblum's chest. (The watermark in the bottom right is also a bit of a giveaway.)
You are eventually able to share designs once the Able Sisters set up shop, but speaking as one of the people who's done this sort of thing, it's not about stocking a storefront. I do a lot of my designing by hand, but there's a certain novelty in seeing the system try and distill hundreds of pixels down to a small block. Some definitely work better than others-my import of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors didn't go very well.
It's about the fun of seeing what can make the jump into the world of Animal Crossing. I also really dig the contrast of importing well-known memes and Twitch emotes into the cozy little world of Animal Crossing.
