Anthem Reportedly Causing Serious PS4 Crashes, Sometime Resulting in Bricked Consoles [Update]

This issue seems to only be affecting PS4 and not Xbox One players.

Update: EA and BioWare says that they are aware of the crashing issue and are investigating the problem. In the meantime, they're urging players who've encountered the PS4 crashing bug to send over a report to the official Anthem forums.

Original Story:Anthem players who primarily play on the PS4 are warning other players that there appears to be an issue causing entire PS4 systems to crash after playing Anthem for a prolonged period. The Anthem subreddit is filled with threads on comments from PlayStation owners discussing similar issues.

In a thread titled, "PSA to Playstation Anthem Players," one player reported that after experiencing some random crashes playing Anthem on the PS4, their hardware has completely bricked, and will no longer turn on. Several other threads on the Anthem subreddit reported something similar after specifically playing Anthem on the PS4.

"My [PlayStation 4] has been completely bricked to the point of not even turning on because of Anthem," writes u/TheMadTitanGauntlet in the Reddit thread. "This post is mainly being made to warn people that this could potentially damage your console to the dreaded point of no return."

The PS4 crashing problem has also been brought up by players on EA's official Anthem forums. In a thread specifically for bug reports, one post complaining about the PS4 crashing issue has received 108 points from the community, and 135 people claim to have the same problem. The thing is, the bug was reported over a week ago, but it seems that more and more players have been encountering the problem ever since.

Even game developers are reportedly having the problem. Kotaku's Jason Schreier reports that an unnamed developer told him that Anthem bricked their console, and that they "aren't alone."

The PS4 has mechanisms in place to deal with overheating, which is what many players suspected was the problem at the time. But according to reports, the crashes are more like when the PS4 suddenly gets unplugged. It's unclear why the PS4 is having this specific kind of reaction when playing Anthem.

While Anthem has been dealing with bugs across platforms, those have mainly been gameplay related. This Anthem bug seems to be targeting PS4 hardware specifically and could potentially result in some costly damages.

We've reached out to EA to ask whether these reports are accurate, and if so if this is a known issue with a fix coming in. In the meantime, check out our Anthem hub for our complete coverage.
