Ark: Survival Evolved Delays Anniversary Event in Respect of Protests

And no, it isn't free on Epic Games Store at the moment.

Today's new free title on the Epic Games Store is not what many expected it to be. A recent supposed leak of Epic's schedule for free titles had people thinking today would kick-off a week-long giveaway for Ark: Survival Evolved, but instead it's a no-show. It may be the case that plans changed between Epic and Ark's makers, Studio Wildcard, given world events.

Studio Wildcard released a statement announcing a delay for an in-game event in Ark from today to next Thursday, June 11. The event was going to serve as a celebration of Ark's anniversary and see the release of a new map, Crystal Isles, for the dinosaur-filled multiplayer survival title.

Of course, Studio Wildcard is one of many companies to postpone plans for this week in response to the ongoing protests against systemic racism and police brutality in the U.S. and around the world (see details on USgamer's response and our upcoming charity stream here). Sony was going to host its first-ever showcase of games for the PlayStation 5 today, and after a delay was announced for that event, many others have followed suit.

"We felt it would be inappropriate to celebrate milestones during the present time as there are bigger things afoot, and that outweighs any plans we otherwise had," reads Wildcard's statement. "We believe now is the time to be respectful and hear the voices of others."

So, if Ark's anniversary event was supposed to coincide with a free giveaway on the Epic Games Store, it's possible that both were delayed as a gesture of respect for the protests. Ark was the last game on the list in a supposed leak of free titles for the duration of Epic's ongoing Mega Sale. Posted while Grand Theft Auto 5 was available for free, the list correctly identified Civilization 6 and the Borderlands Handsome Collection as the other two titles have been made free for a limited time since.

Instead, today's free offering on Epic is the original Overcooked, which is still one of the best co-op games released in the past decade. It's been available for free on Epic's platform before, but now you can grab it if you haven't already and check back in a week to see what the next title on offer is.
