Ark: Survival Evolved, one of the best selling Steam Early Access games came out today as a full release title on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 today.
About the game
Ark: Survival Evolved is as the name implies a survival game where players begin stranded on the mysterious island of ARK. Using their survival skills to tame or hunt the primeval creatures on the island, players must hunt and scavenge for resources, build shelters, craft items, and develop other methods to survive on the island, all while sharing the world with other players who are after the same goal.
First released on Steam Early Access back in 2015, Ark: Survival Evolved had a long development cycle which included a couple dramatic moments including a lawsuit where Studio Wildcard was successfully taken to court for $40 million. Ark made some other controversial moves like releasing paid DLC in Early Access and withholding content from players in order to win an award. However, Ark's Studio Wildcard also said the game sold over 7 million copies of the base game while in Early Access, which is no small feat.
Despite these controversies, Ark is one of the many survival games to successfully come out of Early Access, though now with a higher price tag of $60 as part of its full release (the game sold for half that during Early Access). Still, the community for the game is fairly devoted, and the feature-suite for a survivor game of Ark's caliber is that of a full retail game. There's even a $45 season pass that includes the Scorched Earth DLC and two upcoming expansions for 2017 and 2018.
