Yesterday, a number of previews for Assassin's Creed Origins went live, including our look into the game by the esteemed Kat Bailey. In the end though, it wasn't graphics or sweeping new features that excited the Assassin's Creed community. It was cat petting.
Yes, there are cats in Assassin's Creed Origins. Yes, you can pet them. And thus the gaming community is easily swayed, our joy in petting digital animals overriding anything else.
"GOTY 2017 CONFIRMED," one Reddit user stated. "I demand that this ability be backported into Unity. I was so frustrated I couldn't pet those cute goats," added another. "They listened! They really care about feedback," said one soul who has found themselves again.
You could pet animals in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the last game directed by Assassin's Creed Origins creative director Ashraf Ismail. The Reddit thread in question calls out Ismail by name for the inclusion of petting in Origins. It's the small things that bring us joy, like being able to toggle your assassin hood, which you can also do in Assassin's Creed Origins. But can you pet an alligator I ask?
Assassin's Creed Origins is coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on October 27, 2017.
