Atelier Ryza 2 Lands in North America in January 2021

Atelier Ryza 2 Lands in North America in January 2021

A new RPG adventure, just in time for RPG-loving PS5 owners.

The next game in the Atelier Ryza series isn't far off. Developer Gust Studios and Koei Tecmo announced today that Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy will hit North America at the start of the new year.

Atelier Ryza 2 is coming to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, as well as digitally on PlayStation 5, on Jan. 26, 2021. It may be the second Ryza game, but Atelier Ryza 2 will also mark the 22nd entry in the overall Atelier franchise.

The story of Atelier Ryza 2 once again follows Ryza, as well as returning faces like Lent and Tao. Ryza can complete tasks that are posted to the local bulletin board in the Academy District café, explore the world, and probably get into all sorts of RPG hijinks. According to a press release from Koei Tecmo, there are a number of new combat mechanics as well, so battles can get even more tactical and intense.

I've never played the first Ryza game, but it's the one Atelier I've been hearing about for a while. I'm not sure if this is the "attack and dethrone god" type of RPG, but considering we have some plucky young upstarts and magic, we've already got the makings of one.

What Atelier Ryza 2 does mark is another RPG for the PlayStation 5, which is launching on Nov. 12, 2020 with both a physical media-enabled model and a digital, disc drive-less version. While this holiday season has a few big games for RPG players to sink their teeth into, like Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, that leaves a gap in the early days of 2021. Yakuza: Like a Dragon won't be hitting the PS5 until next March either, so seems like the perfect time to try something new.

Of course, Atelier Ryza 2 is also on the Switch, and I'm weak-willed when it comes to playing RPGs on my Switch. It just feels right, you know? Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy comes to North America via PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and digitally on the PS5 on Jan. 26, 2021.
