Axe of the Blood God: Nadia and Kat Build Their Ultimate RPG Teams

PODCAST | Nadia and Kat start the show with some nice, calming Undertale talk, then get all fired up over custom RPG parties.

Article by Nadia Oxford, .

Axe of the Blood God is our weekly RPG podcast hosted by Kat Bailey and Nadia Oxford. You can find the previous episodes here.

In this week's episode of Axe of the Blood God (download link here), we talk a bit about Undertale's release on the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita, and why Toby Fox's unconventional RPG is still charming the pants off fans two years after its initial release.

Once that's out of the way, Kat and I build our ultimate RPG parties using characters from RPGs released across the decades. What's more important? Power, skills, or fireside chemistry? Let's discuss this. It's really important.

Oh, and we comb through some of the (many) responses we got to our last episode. Man, you guys turn into a bunch of Talky Tinas when I go on vacation!

What party would Kat and Nadia build if they could take any character from any RPG ever? That's what they explore in this week's episode of Axe of the Blood God! (18:00). Also, Nadia recounts her trip to Otakon, the pair praise Undertale (6:45), and they read comments from last week's deep dive into RPG battle systems! (48:16)

    Fun topic!

For my main, I'd take Tidus from FFX, provided I can gaffe tape his mouth shut. I like the Thief class and he also mixes in some delay attacks, haste and slow and a stat buff or two.

I'm going to take a page from Kat's playbook and take Umbreon as my tank (not Vaporeon). His high Def, Special Def and HP makes him great for absorbing damage and he can even self heal with Moonlight and buff up some stats. Plus, now I feel like every party needs a pet.

I'm so stoked that Kat ended up with Freya as their Dragoon cuz she is my #1 choice for that class. She has the obligatory Jump. And when she's in Trance, her jump becomes a skill that rains down spears on enemies for several turns. Plus, you mix in her other skills and you get some healing and MP restorative skills, as well as a powerful attack that becomes more powerful the more Dragons she kills. She may be a bit squishy but she as an ability to stand the back row and do the same damage as if she's in the front

For my mage, I'd take Long, the dragon demon from SMT. It may be a bit of a cheat since the magic he can use is contingent upon how you fuse him, but when I first used him in SMT 4, he could use Fire Ice Wind and Lightning magic as well as a couple buffs. I committed the Cardinal Sin of SMT and got way too attached to him and never used him in a fusion. He's just too cool! He's like a statesmanly Gyarados.

For my healer, I'll take Calista from The Last Story. With powerful healing magic, holy magic and protective magic, she'd do a pretty good job of keeping everyone alive.

    This is a fun exercise!

I laughed out loud when Kat chose Lenneth, as she was my immediate leader choice.

My leader, versatile between front and back ranks: Lenneth Valkyrie
    My tank: Femshep (Vanguard)
    My knight: Cyan Garamonde
My sci-fi mage/summoner: Elhaym Van Houten
    My healer: Tyrande Whisperwind

I see this eclectic group being brought together by Lenneth to bring justice to a great wrong, providing motivation. She'll lead from the back ranks with her bow and astral powers.

Femshep will bring good humor to the group, while in combat charging in, taking a beating, and pushing back with her biotic shields and sci-fi shotguns, customized against their foes.

Cyan will bring his grizzled veteran expertise, and help keep the party on the moral high ground. His sword techniques will serve as a nice opposite to Femshep, covering all their front-line needs. With Magicite, he could bring to bear all the most awesome magic the FF universe has to offer. Also, I have to include the only character I ever wrote fanfiction for.

Elhaym would be inspired by the rest of the team, and likely treated as "the kid". Her pistol and martial arts would surprise enemies from the back rank, and if things got tough she'd bring in her mech for Kaiju-level escalation.

Tyrande, as a huntress and priestess of Elune, would round out the party's personalities with somber surety and fierce determination. When not needing to heal with her holy magic, she's had millennia of practice with her bow.

Now that my group is completed, I wish I'd had room to include Ayla for comic relief, physical strength, and backup heals. Maybe she's a guest party member!

Great pod, as usual, Kat and Nadia! Really liked the discussions and I knew you both would try to sneak Kain in there. Also, Kat's choice for Vaporen was creative and, after she played Chrono Trigger, it was great to see that she would choose Robo.

    As for my party:

Leader: Lightning. The stoic protagonist in the FF XII trilogy proved she could be really versatile by the 3rd game, when she became an Army of One. Her background with the army could prove useful when a strategy was needed and, frankly, she is kinda OP, which is always a good thing on my book.

Knight: Squall. Ok, having the main character of FF VIII is kinda of a cheat, but I really like Squall and I think his interacations with Lightning (or lack thereoff) would be hillarious. He also has a pretty good attack and Limit Break and his ability to draw and use magic could prove useful in a pinch.

Mage: Celes. She has pretty good magic, can handle using a weapon and can power up even more with magicite and her Runic skill is awesome. She can sing and also have a military background.

Tank: MewTwo. He can sure take some damage, can learn a lot of skills, making him versatile, can mega-evolve and has Recover, so he can, at least, heal himself. Also, he could equip Exp. Share in order to make it easier to grow the other party members.

Support: Rise from Persona 4 Golden. She can discover the enemies weakness, heal the party, prevent death, drop buffs and, if really needed, she can change her Persona and become a fighter, as shown in Persona 4 Arena. Also, with so many brooding characters, an energetic person such as Rise could really alleviate things.Edited 2 times. Last edited August 2017 by Jairo-MC

Ok, so, my cast goes for,

Leader: Velvet Crowe from Tales of Berseria.
Tank: Titania from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn.
Mage: Cia from Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors.
Knight: Nier Gestalt from Nier Gestalt.
Cleric: Bard from League of Legends.

As far as group dynamics go; Velvet and Cia would maaaybe hit it off, considering both of them are driven to what they want to get no matter the cost and number of dead bodies they leave behind.

They're both extremely powerful in what they do as Velvet is literally invincible as long as she is in a state called Therion, despite it draining her health.

Cia is the Guardian of Time. Can't get much more powerful than that. Though, she has a soft spot for dumb nerdy guys in green tunics.

Titania would be more of an examplar of the group, and she's a powerful tank that is sadly sidelined later in the game. I would think she would be of a more stricter influence than Nier is.

And speaking of, Nier is dangerous. This we all know. He can relate to Velvet easily. Though, his methodology is questionable and leaves just as many people dead in his wake.

Finally; Bard is Bard. A cosmic, wandering caretaker that only speaks in etheral horns and flutes. They're flightly, easily distracted, but is great support as they can heal, bind enemies, provide travel for the group, and can even stop time for a while.

(I hope this is applicable, as not all of these characters are from JRPGs or turn based ones for that matter.)

I think there was some confusion during the Ryuji discussion. I think Nadia was talking about Yusuke since she mentioned sensei and art and unless there is something I totally missed about Ryuji he doesn't have anything to do with art really.

As for my 5 man team,
    Leader-Yuri Hyuga from Shadow Hearts
    Healer-Yuna Final Fantasy X
    Tank-Isara Gunther+Edelweiss Valkyria Chronicles
    Mage-Aegwynm Warcraft series
Thief-Rikku Final Fantasy XEdited August 2017 by fatalotaku

Some great comments on here, and really enjoyed the podcast. I'm not as well versed in RPGs as you all, but here goes:

    Leader- Lightning (Lightning Returns version)
Pretty sure her impeccable fashion sense, suited to all occasions, would inspire everyone on the team.

    Healer- Ignis (FFXV)
Mostly because he'll COME UP WITH A NEW RECIPE and I need to hear his voice more often to make my life worth living.

Tank- Bit stuck for this one. Skyrim guy? Pretty sure I had a big shield in that at one point.

    Mage- Totori (Atelier Totori)
Not sure if potions count, but it sure looks like magic on screen, and I need to make it up to her for running out of time and totally failing to rescue her mother in that game, thus getting the worst ending.

    Thief- Pomeranian (Tokyo Jungle)
Not entirely sure what the requirements are for a thief, but the Pomeranian is tiny, fast and has a low damage output. Probably hard to spot too.

I'm sure you can all agree that this is the real A-TEAM.

I have been watching people play Undertale, and I guess I'll buy it soon. Why did I think there would be a physical edition on sale at a store? Must've confused it with Axiom Verge or Stardew Valley or something. I guess I'll preorder at Fangamer.

Anyway, my dream RPG team... Hmm...
My hard hitter would be ya boy Kanji, 'cause folding chairs are a cooler weapon than hammers.
Healer would be Dr. Amy Sage from Phantasy Star II, always need a doctor on staff!
Leader would be Mitsuru Kirijo from P3, she's the mastermind.
Tight end would be Makoto ;)
Mage would be Vivi, cute kid with a lot of potential.

But what would the setting be since they all come from disparate worlds? I'd probably just make them all dance for my amusement.

Leader: The Avatar (from Ultima). He (or she!) is literally the embodiment of virtue, and can use any weapon, heavy armor, and all magic. Kind of a jack of all trades, master of them too. So not OP at all, right?

Cleric: Vanille from FFXIII. Healing is important at times, but when everyone is high on HP, you need a healer that can do something else. (What can I say, I'm an old school FFXIV white mage that misses Cleric Stance.) Vanille is an excellent healer, but she can also dish out damage and debuffs. And even though Synergist is a secondary role for her, she gets the amazing Protectra, Shellra, Bravera, and Faithra. And she has a weird accent and an even weirder weapon. What's not to like?

Tank: Gladio from FFXV. He's got a ton of HP, a big sword, and he's just pretty darn cool to boot. Plus, due to the mechanics of FFXV, he can basically never die. I think that's a valuable asset in a tank!

Physical DPS: Sabin from FFVI. This is the one I struggled with the most, but not much beats Bum Rush when you just want to hurt someone. Although technically it's a magic attack. But hey, I can't account for FFVI's mechanical nonsense.

Magic DPS: Rydia from FFIV. Want black magic? Rydia's got that. Want summons instead? She's got those too! Sure it's a redundant combination that would never be seen again in the series, but that just makes her more unique. Plus, Rydia is awesome and stars in my favorite scene from FFIV and possibly the whole series.

    Great episode.

I only need three people on my team:

Sephiroth would be the leader, due to his bizarre lineage and ability to use the Black Materia. Solace would be my mage, since he's secretly an all-powerful wizard. Last, but not least, is Terra/Tina from Final Fantasy 6.

Loved the discussion, although I could pretty much have predicted what Kat would say, especially Valkyrie Profile, her love is endless!

    My party:
Leader- McDohl (Suikoden 1+2)- strong, decisive, high stats all around, plus he's unshakeable! Also he can eat souls!
Cleric- Ness (Earthbound)- not only is he a power hitter, but he comes with healing spells! (probably cheating, don't care)
Mage- Jessica (DQ)- that girl slings spells like nobody's business, plus she's not a damsel in distress, which is refreshing for women characters in JRPGS
Tank- Gatrie (Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn)- I have spent much of the game just letting Gatrie take out anybody who gets close to him, he even has a better magic resistance than most traditional tanks. He's a great choice!
Thief- Locke ( FFVI)- mostly I just love him because he was the first character in an RPG that I found tragic, he's also pretty tough for a thief character, far less brittle than most

It's a fun topic everybody, love reading what you came up with!Edited August 2017 by MikeMaster77

Zidane for my lead, because he always had such a fantastic attitude, great as a leader
Jessica from Lunar as my healer, because when not healing, she was beating the shit out of stuff with a giant mace
Tank is Agrias from FFT. Awesome protector
Olivier from Legend of Heroes is my ranged DPS as the love interest, for pretty much everybody.
And then I'm having a hard time focusing on a mage, so I'll go with Elize from Tales of Xillia because the young girl using dark shadow magic is pretty cool, and Teepo will be both the party pet and comedic relief. The conversations between him and Olivier would be gold.

Also, the pro for taking Freya over Kain... she won't get mind controlled and betray the party every fifteen minutes.

Great podcast! For my party, I'm going to go with the classic Fighter, Thief, Mage, Cleric four person party. My picks:

Fighter: Minsc (BG2), great warrior especially with the Silver Sword (killed Firkraag on the second hit) or Mace of Disruption against undead enemies. Great comic relief: "Evil meet my sword! Sword meet evil!" Runner up: Arngrim (Valkyrie Profile)

Thief: Viktor (Suikoden 1 and 2), kept him in my party through two games. His vampire hunting storyline in 2 was really well written, and I teared up when he served as rear guard allowing the hero to escape in 1. Runner up: Boone (Fallout New Vegas)

Cleric: Yukiko Amagi (Persona 4), her healing spells kept my party going in the Midnight Channel and her infectious laughter is one of the reasons the protagonist chose to woo her at the end of my game. Runner up: Viconia (BG2)

Mage: Edwin Odesseiron (BG2), D&D's magic system is unique in that disrupting magic spells by causing low amounts of damage to enemy mages is almost more important than hitting enemies for a lot of damage. Edwin's entire level 1 spell book was 100% magic missiles and their disruptive ability saved my party on many occasions. After the Nether Scroll has an unexpected effect on him, the way his teammates chide him over the next few weeks (in-game time) is some of the funniest dialogue I've ever seen in a video game, I tried to find a youtube clip with the party banter but was unsuccessful. Runner up: Angela (Seiken Densetsu 3)

@VotesForCows She was a very easy choice! I don't get the hate for the character and she is super powerful in Lightning Returns. If she retains her summons, she can basically destroy almost everyone by herself.

The Blood God came to me in a vision and lamented all the talk of "niceness" in this episode. He also declared that the best defense is a good offense, and the more blood the better.

@VotesForCows Who do you like best now?
I always thought I was an exception for liking Lightning. I liked the 4 boys of FF XV, but none of them has grabbed me like her or Squall, Terra, Locke, Celes and Zack (the best character of FF VII). Someday I'll replay the FFs to see how my opinions would change.Edited August 2017 by Jairo-MC

    Hm, best party...

Leader - Welkin (Valkyria Chronicles). All those orders he gets would be a big benefit to the party.

Cleric - Carlie (Seiken Densetsu 3), as a Sage. She gets multitaraget healing and status curing, can enchant the whole party's weapons to hit different elements or to drain HP/MP, and cast a good holy spell.

Dragoon - Raquel (WA4). She's slow, but she can take a hit, and destroys everything once she gets a turn.

Black Mage - Blue (SaGa frontier). He can get 8 actions every turn, can cast any spell that matters, can heal or reraise the party if necessary, and is even good with a gun when magic can't be used.

Tank - Snow (final fantasy XIII). Because STEELGUARD.
