Fans holding out hope for the sequel to Thomas Happ's surreal Metroid-alike Axiom Verge will be waiting a little longer. Despite hopes set for Fall 2020, Happ has confirmed today that Axiom Verge 2 won't launch before the new year.
In a blog update today, Happ says that despite his best efforts, that original launch window will not happen. The closest estimate he can provide right now is the first half of 2021. "Hopefully sooner in that window than later," Happ writes. "But I don't want to disappoint anyone so I'll just leave it there."
The delay, as Happ goes on to describe, has to do with how much more different Axiom Verge 2 is from its predecessor. Its using a few new mechanics that Happ is debuting today, including "much more sophisticated" enemies that can scan the environment for the player and hunt them if detected.
Axiom Verge 2 will also have its own special feature akin to the Address Disruptor, the tool from the original that essentially glitches the environment and enemies it hits. Happ isn't detailing what Axiom Verge 2's tool is yet, outside that it "serves a similar function but in a way that gives the player more control over the outcome."
The art style of Axiom Verge 2 is also notably different, using natural terrain rather than alien constructs, which has added to the design and art pipeline. And of course, it's 2020. This year hasn't exactly been kind to even the best-laid plans.
It's been some time since we last saw Axiom Verge 2, and even further back for the original Axiom Verge. Yet the original still stands the test of time as a stellar Metroid-style game. Delays are certainly going to happen, especially in our current climate, so it's likely for the best Happ is taking some time. The developer closes his blog by saying he's grateful for all the questions about the release date, saying he's doing his best to "make sure it's worth the wait."
That wait will have to extend until the new year, it seems. For more on what Happ is putting into Axiom Verge 2, check out our interview from last year with him about the development and first reveal of the game.
