The Xbox showcase takes place today, but even before the show started, Square Enix had a few surprises to reveal. Following up on a previous tease, Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima took the spotlight to show off their new game, Balan Wonderworld.
After showing off a series of concept art shots and teasers, the duo at Square Enix revealed a trailer for Balan Wonderworld. Both developers worked on the Sega Saturn classic Nights into Dreams, and Balan Wonderworld looks like a similarly whimsical action game. The team had been teasing something to come for a while under the Balan Company label, and now, we get to see it in action.
According to the Xbox Wire post, Balan Wonderworld follows the duo Emma and Leo as they travel through a strange world led by a maestro named Balan. The core mechanic seems to be costumes; donning specific outfits will change a character's appearance, as well as give them new abilities.
While it was unveiled prior to the Xbox showcase, the Square Enix trailer copy indicates Balan Wonderworld will also be coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 alongside the Xbox One and Series X. It's also headed for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.
Altogether, this was an extremely surprising way to lead into the Xbox showcase, but a welcome surprise. Alongside Yuji Naka's very good hat during the pre-show, a whimsical new adventure from developers behind games like Nights into Dreams sounds like a great time.
Balan Wonderworld arrives for current and next-gen consoles, as well as PC, in spring 2021.
