Battle for Azeroth is the Fastest Selling World of Warcraft Expansion Ever

Shipping 3.4 million units in its first 24 hours.

Blizzard has announced that the latest World of Warcraft expansion, Battle for Azeroth, has shattered series records, becoming the fastest selling WoW expansion of all time. Battle for Azeroth managed to ship 3.4 million units in its first day on the market.

The news of the sizeable expansion’s success comes via a press release, which contains sales data for August 14. Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment commented on the impressive day-one sales figures, saying the following:

Battle for Azeroth is a definitive chapter in the Horde and Alliance conflict at the heart of Warcraft, and it’s been thrilling to see players representing their factions in record numbers and embarking on their war campaigns—not to mention joining in ourselves. But the launch is just the beginning of this conflict. More epic content is coming to World of Warcraft in the weeks ahead, and we can’t wait for players to experience the full story as it unfolds over the course of the expansion.

Battle for Azeroth is the seventh major expansion to come to World of Warcraft since launch, and sees azeroth’s finest setting out on a journey to the lost kingdoms of Kul Tiras, and Zandalar. It adds new playable Allied Races into the mix, and new gear and artifacts. There’s plenty still to be added to the game, including the first PvP season and Mythic Keystone dungeon season, which will both arrive on September 4.

Battle for Azeroth’s first raid will also be added on september 4. It’s called Uldir, and offers up an ancient titan facility housing horrific Old God experiments gone awry. A 20-player co-op battle set in the Arathi Highlands is also coming in the next few weeks, in “Stromgarde”, Battle for Azeroth’s first Warfront. Blizzard plans to keep adding smaller updates to the game for the foreseeable future too, so stay tuned for more news.
