Battleborn is Free-to-Play, but Don't Call it That

Battleborn is Free-to-Play, but Don't Call it That

It's actually a free trial, but might as well be the whole game.

Battleborn is getting an extensive free trial that makes the game essentially free-to-play all but in name. The "free downloadable experience," comes with no restrictions so you can play as long as you want, to however high a level you want to reach. Content that isn't available in the trial can either be unlocked or purchased separately.

Among Battleborn's other "trial" features include access to all 30 characters, although only six heroes will be available at a time, rotated every week. Additionally, hero and player account progression is also permanent, so if you want to come back to the unlimited free trial, you can do so knowing your saves and progress will pick up where you left off. The rest of the game's modes like Story Operations as well as skins and loot can be purchased in-game using credits or Platinum currency.

As for players who bought Battleborn before the free trial, they will be entitled to "Founder" status which comes with Legendary Gear, 1,000 Platinum, 50,000 Credits, Loot Packs, and other special items. This feels like a lot of things to give existing players just for announcing a free trial.

Another push to get new players through the free trial, Gearbox appears to be going all-in for new players offering separate queues to help train new players, along with unlimited practice time for all 30 characters. Once new players reach Command Rank 20, they will be allowed to join the regular matchmaking queues with Battleborn veterans.

Rumors circulated that Battleborn will go free-to-play since last September, but Gearbox's Randy Pitchford remains adamant that the free trial is just that, a free trial. The actual Battleborn experience is "retail with DLC" though the whole multiplayer Moba raison d'être of Battleborn is practically available now, without paying the actual retail price.

Battleborn came out in May last year where it was quickly overshadowed by another big release, Blizzard's Overwatch. Despite being relatively different games, the two games were compared with one another, and well, it's easy to see which game won the lion's share of gamers attention.

Still, hopefully players are willing to check out the free trial considering Gearbox is offering so much content for potential new players. You can try out the Battleborn trial on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
