Battlefield 1 Update Offers New Map, Grenade Crossbow, and Spectator Mode

The Giant's Shadow looms large over the first major Battlefield 1 update.

Electronic Arts and DICE have offered up details for the first major Battlefield 1 update. The update go live tomorrow for everyone who pre-ordered Battlefield 1 or bought the Premium Pass DLC Subscription for the game. If you're not in that list, the update will launch on December 20.

The biggest addition will be a new map, Giant's Shadow. The map is based on the Battle of the Selle, a conflict that raged from October 17-25 in 1918 on the banks of the Selle River in France. Giant's Shadow is alongside the Cateau Wassigny railway, with a good deal of open ground for players. The "giant" in question is the burned husk of a zeppelin.

Then there's the Grenade Crossbow, a new gadget for the Support class. It does what it says on the tin: it's a crossbow that launches grenades over a long distance.

There's also a new Spectator Mode, allowing players to join a live Battlefield 1 match and observe. Observers have a number of different camera options, including first-person, third-person, a bird's eye table top view, or the flying Free Cam. Spectator Mode includes depth of field options and other camera filters. DICE is hoping players use the mode to create community video content.

Finally, the update adds a new custom game type: Standard Issue Rifles. With this game type on, all class only have access to their faction's standard issue rifle. The game type is intended to give players an experience closer to actual World War I trench combat.

Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
