Bethesda Game Studios Still Has Two Games to Make Before Working on Elder Scrolls 6

It's still a long wait until the next Elder Scrolls.

News by Matt Kim, .

If you're still wondering where The Elder Scrolls 6 is, well you'll still be waiting for a while. This week, Bethesda's marketing VP Pete Hines confirmed what we heard before, that there are still two big games coming before work on the next Elder Scrolls even begins.

"But wait," you might be asking. Bethesda's been putting out a lot of games since Fallout 4, like two more Skyrims.

As Hines clarified, those games, including the recent Skyrim remasters and ports, were done by other studios. And of course games published by Bethesda don't count either as we're talking specifically about games from Bethesda Game Studios.

The last we've heard, Bethesda Game Studios is rumored to be working on an open-world space game called "Starfield," though that rumor hasn't been spoken about in quite some time. And even if that game comes out, there will be yet another game after that, that won't be an Elder Scrolls Game (Fallout 5, maybe?).

So either way you cut it, Elder Scrolls is still far, far off. There's always The Elder Scrolls Online though, or new mods from fans who are remastering The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the Skyrim engine.

I sure hope the other game is a real Fallout game and not another Far Cry in the Wasteland: Part 2.

Yeah, I heard a while back that Bethesda didn't have a new Elder Scrolls game in the works anytime soon since they didn't wanna be all Elder Scrolls > Fallout > Elder Scrolls > Fallout > Elder Scrolls > Fallout 'til the end of time, and given how Sonic Team and Game Freak got typecast into making Sonic/Puyo Puyo sequels and new Pokémon titles for all eternity,* I don't blame them. Even if it's been six years since Skyrim.

Let Zenimax's ESO MMORPG team do their thing for now, Bethesda will make Elder Scrolls VI when they're good and ready.

    * Really though, is it all that surprising anymore that Sonic games have some gimmick nobody asked for shoehorned into them? Like, Sonic games still sell really well thanks to kids, longtime fans, and furries (and varying combinations of the three), but it should be obvious by now that Sonic Team wants to do things besides Sonic. It's why we see the odd werehog mode or gadget-wielding Original the Character (Do Not Steal) in these games.

At least Game Freak got to break away to make a couple of indies before going right back to Pokémon forever.

@MetManMas Its been 7 years since Skyrim and we did get a new albeit in my opinion underwhelming Fallout just 3 years ago so I am totally cool to wait to get ES 6 cause maybe they will have a new cool engine and it will be a launch title for the next gen systems.

While I do like the confidence to take their time, will anyone care if it we have to wait another decade?

@cldmstrsn Six years. Well almost 6.25, it came out on November 11, 2011.

As for my own personal opinions on Fallout 4, I don't think it's a bad game. It's a pretty solid open world post apocalyptic sci-fi game with a shiny new engine and some really awesome set pieces to see. The problem is, it's not much of a Fallout game.

The dialogue system was dialed back significantly, likely 'cuz the protagonist talks now...though that didn't stop Geralt from having worthwhile dialogue options in Witcher 3, released by CD Projekt Red the same year months before Fallout 4. But for me, the bigger disappointment was how there's too much of a focus on killing shit at the expense of other things. Like, Bethesda rigged up a scenario where people bet on robot races and it just ended up being yet another raider shooting gallery.

Also it came out after Fallout: New Vegas. Obsidian gave players a slice of that sweet, sweet Ferrari cake, and they wanted more; Fallout 4 gave them an Acura cake. A solid machine (in cake form) in its own right, but it's not the car they wanted.

Anyway, I don't wanna even think about having to buy yet another console right now (other than Switch), but I'll definitely look forward to Elder Scrolls 6 whenever it comes out for whatever it's on. Really hoping we'll get to visit Black Marsh; it seceded from the Empire, it sacked Morrowind, a swampland full of sentient lizard men would make a pretty cool setting.
