The indie showcase BitSummit is coming back with its first-ever online showcase. The new BitSummit Gaiden will take place from June 27 to 28, and feature games from Japan and around the world with demos, streaming, and a Discord server.
BitSummit Gaiden will spotlight over 75 games in its indie showcase. A dedicated BitSummit Discord server will host live chats with game developers, as well as Let's Play segments and giveaways alongside the Twitch streams.
The expo is also partnering with game streaming service Utomik to play select demos of games highlighted by BitSummit Gaiden. These will be available for free, from June 26 through July 11, on Utomik, and official selection links will be posted in the BitSummit Discord. You can check out the full list of games being showcased here.
Gaiden will also feature community activities, like rooting for various BitSummit Heroes through voting, and special hashtags. "Gaiden loosely translates to 'side story' in Japanese," said John Davis of the BitSummit Organizing Committee in a statement. "And while this new incarnation has a different format, we're bringing back all the things that make BitSummit special."
This indie showcase is the latest to go digital due to growing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. The show announced in March that its 8th Bit event set for May had been canceled. Other shows, like Gamescom 2020, have also gone digital in response to concerns over COVID-19. Many publishers are planning their own online events to showcase reveals of upcoming games too.
As one of the more prominent indie expos around, especially for Japanese developers, it's good to see BitSummit manage to take things online and carry on. The weekend is set to kick off on June 27, thankfully further away from the news traffic jam at the start of June.
