Those hungry for a new pixelated Castlevania-esque experience will get a new one soon enough. Today, Team17 announced Blasphemous, a dark and creepy mixture of exploration and action coming to PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
The trailer for Blasphemous is filled with blood, demons, and really all manner of nasty things. You play as a metal cone-headed warrior, venturing through the disarray and hordes of creatures on a quest for redemption. The player character, The Penitent One, is the sole survivor of a massacre and has to explore the nightmare world of "Cvstodia" to find a remedy for your torment.
While the aesthetic is somewhere in the area of Souls, shots in the trailer look more akin to Castlevania, as you traverse different areas and meet new characters. Some may offer you aid, but ask something in return, implying a quest system.
The site for the game also says you'll accumulate upgrades and new moves throughout the game, expanding your options and attuning them to your playstyle. You'll also fight really gnarly bosses, like the giant crying baby in the trailer.
This all seems incredibly dark and grim for a summer game, but if you're into a little bit of exploration and enjoy the sorrow, then Blasphemous might be right up your alley. I expect we'll learn more about this new game from Team17 as we get closer to E3 2019, which is only a few days away at this point. Keep up with all the goings-on with our E3 2019 guide.
